BALTIMORE COUNTY - On Tuesday, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski and the Department of Recreation and Parks showcased the revamped Southwest Regional Recreation Center, a 24,000-square-foot facility for indoor activities.
Previously known as the Leadership Through Athletics Center, Baltimore County acquired the space in 2022, solidifying its commitment to broadening access to recreational facilities in the region.
"The Southwest Regional Recreation Center has a storied history in our county and will remain an essential community resource, providing much-needed recreational programs all year round," said County Executive Olszewski. "My deepest gratitude goes out to our local and state partners for their investment and to the Department of Recreation and Parks for their dedication in preparing the space."
Funded with a $3.17 million grant from Maryland's Program Open Space, the center underwent modest renovations, including new carpet and a fresh coat of interior paint to meet county standards. The facility includes a double gymnasium, a second-floor half gym, a multipurpose room, and a basement area for activities, making it a flexible venue for various community events and activities.
"Having accessible recreational spaces is key to fostering good health, mental well-being, and community engagement," said County Councilman Pat Young. "Seeing the Leadership Through Athletics facility transition into a county-operated center ensures that the community will continue to have a focal point for active, healthy lifestyles. Thank you to the Grace Family for their years of service and to County Executive Olszewski for preserving this important community asset."
The grand opening marks the eleventh facility added to Baltimore County's recreational portfolio since the start of 2021, illustrating the county's ongoing dedication to offering residents a range of recreational opportunities.
Managed by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Southwest Regional Recreation Center aims to continue the community-centric programming legacy initiated by its previous owners, the Grace family.
