BALTIMORE COUNTY - Baltimore County is hosting an online sale of compost bins and rain barrels to promote sustainable practices of home composting and rainwater reuse.

Compost bins will be sold for $55 and rain barrels for $65 (tax included). They can be ordered through Wednesday, April 12. The county is offering a significant discount on these items. According to price capsule, an online cost-averaging tool, compost bins sell for an average of ~$100.

Compost bins are precious tools for gardeners and environmentalists alike. Composting converts food scraps and yard materials into a rich soil-enhancing material called humus through decomposition. When mixed with the soil in your gardens or lawn, this material returns nutrients such as phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and many trace minerals that are beneficial for plant health and growth. Compost also helps increase water retention in sandy soils and aids drainage in heavy and clay soils (such as most of the soil in Baltimore County).

Rain barrels reduce stormwater runoff and provide a source of fresh, chlorine-free water for plants.

Orders will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Lot 7 at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) 's Essex Campus, located at 7201 Rossville Boulevard. Purchasers should bring a receipt, and distribution will take place rain or shine. There will be no purchases available at the distribution location.
