WOODLAWN, MD - Baltimore County plans to purchase the vacant Sears at Security Square Mall.
The store went out of business in 2019 as the company closed locations nationwide.
Through a $10 million contract with property owner TF Baltimore MD LLC, Baltimore County will acquire about 18 acres of land that includes the former Sears building that is directly connected to the mall. The building is 202,653 square feet.
“The Security Square Mall site is a critical anchor for the communities on the west side of Baltimore County, and our administration is committed to revitalizing the area and making sure it will serve as a vibrant community hub for years to come,” County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. said in a statement on Friday. “This timely purchase demonstrates the county’s commitment to making the community’s vision for the site a reality."
The county will use $10 million dollars in capital funds committed in the Fiscal Year 2023 budget as well as state capital dollars to buy part of the 90-acre Security Square Mall site that has multiple owners with disparate uses, county officials said.
Baltimore County plans to involve people in the community in deciding what should go there. This fall, officials say they will engage the public in the process.
I hope that the plan include walk paths, open spaces with seating to view nature and consequences for people littering, loitering and killing the wildlife.
I can’t believe these are our ‘leaders’. Drugs deals on every corner and in every parking lot. Johnny Clueless so concerned about low income earners, when they live better than the middle class. Garbage bags littered everywhere by mostly the people Johnny ‘entitled’ to county houses.
My concern about some of the logic being used here is that the problem isn't the plastic bags.
Let's talk about the people who are doing the littering. Full garbage bags placed on the streets and sideways. Garbage being thrown from cars and trucks. Pedestrians walking and eating..than throwing garbage on the ground. Dog walkers not picking up after their dogs. Etc..
