WASHINGTON, DC — An Owings Mills day care center owner is behind bars after she reportedly shot and injured her husband in a hotel room in Washington, D.C., upon hearing he had been molesting children at her business.

Shanteari Weems, 50, of Randallstown, was charged with aggravated assault while armed with a gun and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.

The shooting occurred at the Mandarin Oriental hotel Thursday night and resulted in life-threatening injuries, police told WTTG, the Fox affiliate in Washington, D.C. Weems left a letter in the hotel room saying she intended to paralyze her husband but not kill him for what he did to the children, the news station reported.

Weems owns Lil Kidz Kastle Daycare Center in Owings Mills, which is closed as the Baltimore County Police Department investigates the claims made by children there, according to WJZ. The center is in the 11400 block of Cronhill Drive.

Weems's husband, who is hospitalized, is a former officer who retired from the Baltimore Police Department in 2005, the Baltimore Sun reported. The newspaper noted he has not been charged.

Weems is set to appear in D.C. Superior Court at 10:30 a.m. on Monday for a preliminary hearing, court records show.
