On the article O'Donnell's Sea Grill To Close Its Doors

ReplyToday the Rockville Sister City Corporation had a luncheon at O'Donnell's to honor the past RSCC presidents, Rotraut Bockstahler and James McConkey. All 36 attendees talked about how sad it is to hear that O'Donnell's is closing its door the end of the summer. Our meals and service today was the best. Congratulations to William (Billy) Edelblut for his new chapter in life. Thank you Billy for the many years of good service with great seafood. We will miss your restaurant.
I also remember my mother working at the Bethesda O'Donnell's Restaurant, my younger sisters hat checking there, and my attendance of many office retirement luncheons. -

ReplyHow does that raise compare to what the Federal and State employees got? I didn't get a COLA in a couple of years, but all my taxes and fees increased.

On the article Debate: Is Ban on Political Banners at Memorial Day Parade Constitutional?
Brigitta Mullican

ReplyIt's about who controls what is in the parade. Is the goal to keep it under 2 hours long? Allowing the throwing of candy by some and not others is unfair. I do believe that the kids running into the parade route is a distraction for the parade group following the cars throwing out candy, but the kids love it. However, it is fair if the RULES are disseminated ahead of time to all and enforced the day of the parade. I have personal experience of having followed the parade rules as a candidate while another group did not with no consequences. I look forward to hearing what the parade rules are this year. If there is limit of participants for each group, it needs to be the same for all. How many are allowed in a band group, how many are allowed as elected officials, candidates, etc. The parade rules all need to be fair, communicated and enforced.

Eric, you make some very good arguments. All the legislation is not going to stop the killings that happens. We have so many laws now that are not enforced. This last week the country has seen two more tragic stories that involved death without a gun. I respect both side for sharing their beliefs and each legislator voted their conscience. Gun are not the problem. Certain evil people will find a way to be destructive.
Control gun is not the answer. Why is it that so many innocent people are to sacrifice for those few evil people who want to destroy our freedom? The close vote obviously shows how divided the issue is. -

ReplyMy friend in the Boston area writes, "It’s crazy in the city today as they hunt for the last of the two surviving bombers."
I am so sorry to hear that there are people who do these evil destructive acts that causes so much havoc, killing and pain. Hope there are no more deaths in the pursuit of finding the killer on the loose. -
On the article (UPDATED) City Council Recap: Budget Hearing, Work Session Top the Agenda

ReplyThe City of Rockville Council would better serve the citizens of Rockville with a 7-member Mayor and Council. The 7-member Rockville Planning Commission (RPC) worked well when I served on the commission for 7 years. The RPC work hard and represent the entire City of Rockville and make important land use decisions and are concerned with our health and welfare of the city.

On the article (UPDATED) City Council Recap: Budget Hearing, Work Session Top the Agenda

ReplyI oppose the recommendation to “move city elections from odd-numbered years to every four years to coincide with presidential elections.”
I support a 4-year term. Moving from a 2 to 4-year term is reasonable and will save the City of Rockville staff time and money. The City election should NOT coincide with the presidential election. If this is on the ballot this way, I will not be able to vote the way I want since the two issues are lumped together. I hope the City Council will separate these two issues.
Adding the City of Rockville ballot to the presidential ballot will make the ballots much longer, confuse people and might even discourage voters from completing the entire ballot. Voters are confused enough and should not be complicated with mixing partisan with non-partisan elections.
In my opinion mixing the partisan with non-partisan election will cause much confusion and should not be done. There are already too many campaign workers handing out literature before the voter enters the voting poll place. Many voters are annoyed with this so why create the opportunity for more frustration? Also campaign workers will be torn with who to help on Election Day.
I support increasing the number of City Council members from four to six. Rockville tax payers will be better represented. Extra money spent on this is worth better representation. -
On the article Rockville City Council Pay Raise Approved

ReplyThere are bigger budget items the City of Rockville Council is approving in this year's Budget. What is the City's debt rate this year? I remember when it was 7% and went to 23%. I wish I had time to review the City Budget more. It matters not how many comments we write, a 3 vote will approve the City Budget. After all, we pay the Council to represent us and make the tough decisions.

On the article Montgomery County Council: Andrews Proposes Energy Tax Reduction

ReplyIs this really being considered to pass by the County Council, "pay raises of 13.5 percent for most non-public safety employees, 14.7 percent for most police officers and 19.5 for most career firefighters—those eligible for step increases—over the next two years,”? How many in the public know what salaries the country employees earn? If a raise is given, it needs to be at a lower rate and go more to the lower wage earners. The top salary people aren't affected as much as the lower wage earners from all the tax and fee increases. Another real burden for the lower wage earners is the new Maryland gasoline tax. It will increase the cost of goods and services. It is hard to read about this raise when there are furloughs and job cuts.

With all the cuts I have seen the City make, I am surprised to see the proposed $114 million budget is nearly $7 million bigger than the current budget and about $2 million more. I haven't had time to review this year's budget and want to know what the city debt rate is? How much of the 2004 Operating Bond is still outstanding for the 3 city garages that were built? I wonder how close the operating revenues came each year to the projections provided in 2004 figures?
