An off-duty Baltimore City Police officer was charged with two counts of reckless endangerment after pointing his departmentally-issued handgun at people in Towson. Matthew David Daugherty, 28, was arrested around 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning and later released on $75,000 bail. Baltimore County Police responded to the Rec Room at 512 York Road in Towson at 2:15 a.m., where an employee told them an intoxicated off-duty city officer was acting belligerent and saying he had a gun. The employee took car keys from the man as the bar was closing because he appeared too intoxicated to drive, according to a police press release. (Update 5:05 p.m.)— A shooting occurred during a Wednesday afternoon struggle between a Baltimore County police officer and a hospitalized prisoner at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. A gun, which belongs to the officer, was shot into a wall, according to a Baltimore County Police Department statement. There were no reported injuries. Police said the scuffle began at around 2:34 p.m. when hospital staff found a needle hidden in the clothing of the prisoner, a man arrested for burglary. According to the statement, the officer intervened when the prisoner grabbed a medical staff person. The officer and prisoner then reportedly fought over the officer's gun. A Baltimore County judge said Friday that each of the two men convicted in a fatal Towson shooting last December should spend the "balance of his natural life" behind bars. Judge Robert E. Cahill sentenced Frank Theodore Williams, 32, of Baltimore Highlanda and William Ward III, 45, of Baltimore to life without parole for the first-degree murder conviction as a result of their roles in the fatal December shooting at Towson Town Center. Fights erupted outside the Recher Theatre where a crowd of about 2,500 gathered Sunday morning.
Seven people were arrested for disorderly conduct or assault after fights broke out outside Recher Theatre early Sunday morning. Brian Recher, owner of the theater, said tickets for a clothing drive hosted Saturday night were sold at the door on a first come, first served basis. Recher said the event was put on by the Theta Mu Mu chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, a post-collegiate group not affiliated with any university. Once the venue was filled to capacity, people were turned away, he said. "Everybody inside was well-behaved," he said. "Everybody had a great time; there were no problems." It was nine years ago, almost to the day, that Baltimore County faced one of its biggest snowstorms ever. Public safety crews had to get around town and county public works crews had to clear roads. The cleanup efforts, complicated by more than 2 feet of snow, were hampered further by an antiquated, unreliable radio system.
