Education Secretary's School Safety Town Hall Set

Arne Duncan will speak to interested parties at Loch Raven High School in April.

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan's school safety town hall, which will emphasize gun control, has been scheduled. Baltimore County Superintendent Dallas Dance announced the visit earlier this month, noting that gun control is a topic Duncan is passionate about. "Today, looking into the eyes of parents who have lost children due to gun violence, I am more committed than ever, and the President is, too," Duncan wrote in a Jan. 16 post on the U.S. Department of Education blog. "Those parents’ unimaginable heartbreak and extraordinary strength must motivate us to act. Now is the time. Our children, families, educators, communities and our country deserve better. We can’t let them down." The event is scheduled for April 10, from 6 to 7:45 p…

Steve - that's BS and you know it. The entire Dept of Ed is a huge waste of public funds that could be used to support schools in need rather than paying fat salaries to mouthpieces like Duncan. School safety is a local issue and unfortunately BCPS and the BCPD are not securing buildings. I'm on a school parking lot RIGHT NOW and I'm watching kids and adults walking in and out of a BCPS school. …   more ›

Baltimore County Teacher Evaluation Plan Among 9 Rejected By State

The Maryland State Department of Education said the plan did not align with state law regarding student growth measurements.

During his report before Board of Education Tuesday night, Superintendent Dallas Dance said school administrations across the state were notified of the decisions last week. "We are engaging right now with [Teachers Association of Baltimore County], we're engaging with [Council For Advancement and Support of Education] right now to figure out our next steps," Dance said. The primary issue, he said, was that the state department wants the county to count Maryland School Assessment results as 20 percent of the rating measuring student growth. Baltimore County's plan calls for 10 percent. Dance's …

But wait - MOM keeps saying that Maryland schools #1. Somebody's telling a fib! Glad to hear BCPS is taking MD to task. Systems that have adopted value added models of teacher evaluation have demonstrated that the concept sounds great but simply cannot be implemented in a fair and consistent manner. Hopefully common sense will prevail - but I'm not hopeful.   more ›

Baltimore County, City Strike Out on Race to the Top Grant

The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday the 16 school district winners that will share the $400 million grant.

Baltimore County Public Schools and Baltimore City Public Schools, finalists in the Race to the Top-District Competition, were not among the districts selected to partake in a $400 million grant to improve schools.  Had they been selected, the local school districts would have received four-year awards ranging from $10 to $40 million dollars, based on the number of students served. The U.S. Department of Education named the 16 school district winners in an announcement on its website Tuesday. "The Race to the Top-District grantees have shown tremendous leadership though developing plans that will transform the learning environment and enable students to receive a personalized, world-class education," said Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of …
