Robberies Up from Last Year, Down in Long-Term

While robberies are up from last year’s number, this year is still under long-term averages.

While there has been an uptick in robberies in 2012 compared to 2011 in the police precinct for Owings Mills and Reisterstown, the number is below the five-year average, according to Baltimore County Police. Police in the Franklin Precinct, which covers Reisterstown and Owings Mills, experienced two recent commercial armed robbery trends, the first such trends in two years. As of Nov. 1, there were 38 robberies year-to-date in the Franklin Precinct. That number includes commercial robberies as well as street robberies. For the years 2007 to 2011, the average number of robberies as of Nov. 1 was 47, said Capt. Matthew McElwee, commander of the Franklin Precinct. Owings Mills Teen Robbed Using Basketball

Two 14-year-old tried to steal another 14-year-old's backpack after hitting him in the head with a basketball.

An Owings Mills teen was robbed of his backpack by two other teens after they threw a basketball at his head Sunday. He got the bag back with nothing taken from it, police said. The Owings Mills teen, who is 14 and student at Old Court Middle School, was walking on Old Court Road at Winands Road at 6:19 p.m. Sunday when two other teens, both 14, struck his head with a basketball and took his backpack, police said. He got the backpack back, and nothing had been taken from it. Charges have not been filed, according to the police report. One of the suspects is from Windsor Mill, and the other from Randallstown.

Three Charged in Attempted Stun Gun Puppy Robbery

Three people accused of using stun gun to steal acquaintance's dog.

Three people have been charged in an Aug. 30 incident in which a stun gun was used as a weapon in an attempt to steal a puppy belonging to an acquaintance, according to police. At around 5:55 p.m., a 23-year-old woman who lives on the 3800 block of McDowell Lane was outside with her puppy when she was approached by a man and two women who attempted to take her pet, police said. One of the suspects produced a stun gun, but the weapon was not used on the victim, according to police. The suspects fled the scene when the victim resisted, but later returned and were arrested, police said. Reisterstown Man Charged in Robbery, Assault

A Reisterstown resident was arrested and charged in an incident in which a woman was choked and punched.

A Reisterstown man was arrested and charged Tuesday after robbing a woman of her cell phone and choking and punching her, Baltimore County Police said. Aaron Brian Smith Jr., 23, of the 12300 block of Bon Crest Drive in Reisterstown, was charged Tuesday with robbery and first-degree assault, according to Lt. Rick Landsman of the Baltimore County Police Franklin Precinct’s investigative services division. Smith led an 18-year-old Baltimore woman into the woods near the unit block of Trout Brook Circle in Reisterstown at 5:25 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, choked her from behind, pushed her to the ground and punched her several times.
