New Town High School students were recognized by WJZ and the Optimist Club for essays and speeches.
Chioma Eneremadu doesn’t think she’s a great public speaker, but WJZ-13 is of a different opinion. The New Town High School senior won second place in WJZ’s Black History Oratory Contest on Feb. 17, earning herself a $1,200 college scholarship. “It’s weird because I’m not really good at speaking in front of people, so I was surprised,” she said. Fellow senior April Fernandez was a runner-up, one of 20 students who presented their speeches. Another one of their classmates, freshman Lauren Sifford, won $100 from the Optimist Club of Reisterstown/Owings Mills in an essay contest, and is up for $2,500 in the statewide contest. Fernandez, who was also a finalist last year, and Eneremadu focused their speeches on inspirational quotes. Fernandez …

Baltimore County will hold a community input meeting about the Foundry Row project at New Town High School on Monday, Feb. 11.
Area residents will have another chance to voice their concerns to Baltimore County and developers at a community input meeting for the Foundry Row project next month. At 7 p.m. Feb. 11 a community input meeting on the development, a $140 million retail and business center to be built at the vacant Solo Cup plant, will be held at New Town High School. County officials will be at the meeting at 6:30 p.m. to answer questions prior to the meeting. At a public concept meeting in January, residents asked developers about traffic, the mix of retailers and road improvements. Little time was spent discussing the signatures submitted by two groups backed by opposing developers asking the county to bring its zoning decisions to referendum. “We …

The opportunity was the result of a partnership between the schools, Junior Achievement, and the Towson-based company.
A group of Baltimore County students got a first-hand opportunity to see the how the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) parts of their education work in real life. Sixteen students from Overlea High School's Academy of Finance, 10 students from New Town High School and 10 students from Baltimore City's National Academy Foundation High School paid a visit to a variety of business leaders at Towson-based Stanley, Black & Decker on Friday. The students were able to learn about recruiting, engineering, marketing and business management during the three-and-a-half-hour-long program organized by the education non-profit Junior Achievement of Central Maryland. "Before visiting Stanley Black & Decker I never knew that they …

Titans gear up defensively, outscore Wolverines 14-4 in third frame to take home Class 1A North title.
This time last year, New Town’s Jalen Clarke, stood in an Owings Mills High School hallway, lamenting what could have been. The Titans were one crucial call away from advancing to the state semifinals in College Park for the first time since 2007. However, Saturday afternoon at Western Tech, Clarke’s—and New Town’s—post game mood was the polar opposite of last year’s. Netting a game-high 27 points, Clarke helped lead a second half surge that saw the Titans come out completely revitalized on defense en route to a 62-57 victory to secure the Class 1A North championship. Senior forward Devron Goodwyn tallied 14 points and sophomore point guard Danny Shand added 13 to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. The Titans will take on the …

The Wolverines staved off a frenetic second half spurt to top the Titans in Friday's Class 1A North Championship.
After a sluggish first half and a 14-point deficit midway through the third quarter, New Town found themselves amid a potential milestone comeback with about 70 seconds play in Friday’s region championship at Western Tech. Trailing by five, Sydney Hines sliced through the defense, connected on an off-balanced runner and was fouled to pull the Titans within one score at 39-36. However, before New Town could even think about getting a crucial defensive stop on the other end, Western Tech’s Deja Dennis grabbed Hines’ missed free throw and—rather than slow up the pace to take time off the clock—kicked it into full gear. The seldom used freshman raced the length of the court and sank a layup while absorbing a reach-in foul from New Town’s …

*Update 2:03 p.m.* After nearly 2,400 votes all together, Patch will be heading to Western Tech tonight to cover New Town in the Class 1A North Championship. Owings Mills went into Thursday night a commanding lead in votes, but New Town fans stormed back in front this morning. Patch will also have a post on the Eagles who host Loch Raven at 7 p.m., as both teams try to punch their ticket to the state semifinals in College Park. **** Both Owings Mills and New Town secured region semifinal wins that places each girls varsity team in their respective region championship games on Friday. New Town boys varsity opens game on 18-0 run, never looks back en route to 86-34 win.
Throughout the season, New Town head coach Mike Salapata has hammered home to his team that when they share the basketball, they are awfully tough to beat. In Thursday night’s Class 1A North semifinal against Bohemia Manor, the Titans did just that. Led by a team-high 16 points from senior forward Devron Goodwyn, nine New Town players factored into the scorebook—including five with at least nine points—as the Titans dished, drove and dunked their way to an 86-34 victory. Senior Jalen Clarke tallied 15 points and junior C.J. Jacob added 10 for a Titans squad that heaped on the defensive pressure early and turned the matchup into a virtual layup line from the get-go. After storming out on an 18-0 run, New Town (18-6) extended the lead to 24-…

New Town held Friendship Academy of Science and Technology to just 18 points in its Class 1A North semifinal win.
New Town may have struggled a bit finishing opportunities to score, but when you hold your opponent to single digit points through almost two-and-a-half quarters, it’s tough to complain about a lack of offense. Wednesday night, the Titans pressed ball handlers, clogged passing lanes and generally made things very uncomfortable for visiting Friendship Academy of Science and Technology (FAST) en route to a 46-18 victory. The Lady Cheetahs (13-7) didn’t reach double digit points until knocking down a free throw with 5:22 to play in third quarter to make the score 27-10. For New Town (19-4), freshman guard Sidney Hines led the way, netting a game-high 25 points and sparking the Titans from the get-go. In the first quarter alone, Hines factored…

New Town topped Perryville, 92-32, to advance into the Class 1A North semifinals.
Although his Titans led visiting Perryville 21-14 at the end of the first quarter, New Town head coach Mike Salapata implored his team to pick up the intensity on the defensive end. Did they ever. New Town allowed just 18 points over the final three quarters combined, while continuing to carve up the Perryville defense on the other end of the floor en route to a dominating, 92-32, win in the Class 1A North quarterfinals. The second seeded Titans (17-6) will host the winner of the 3-6 match up between Bohemia Manor (Harford County) and Sparrows Point. Every New Town player factored into the scoring Tuesday night as forward Devron Goodwyn led the way with a team-high 18. Guard Josh Gerard netted 14 points and forward Devin Brown added 12. “…
