Police Were Worried About Homicide Victim’s Safety

Police developed a safety plan with Katie Hadel that included staying out of her Owings Mills apartment, where her alleged killer stabbed her to death Tuesday night.

Baltimore County Police were working with Katie Hadel to keep her safe from the man who is accused of killing her. “We were deeply concerned for her safety,” said police spokeswoman Elise Armacost. Hadel, 33, was found stabbed to death in her Owings Mills apartment Tuesday night. The man charged with first-degree murder in her death, Jeffrey Michael Shiflett, was being sought by police on multiple warrants, Armacost said. “This suspect has been known to us for years. He’s been issuing threats for years to the victim, to police, to judges, to attorneys, using the phone, using social media,” Armacost said. “He got out of jail in December. Homicide Victim’s Friends Mourn on Facebook

Friends of Katie Hadel, the woman who was killed in Owings Mills Tuesday night, have been expressing their condolences on her Facebook page.

Katie Hadel has been described as “gorgeous,” “great” and a “beautiful spirit” by her Facebook friends. Since her death on Tuesday night, friends have posted memories and condolences on Hadel’s Facebook wall. Hadel was stabbed Tuesday night in her Owings Mills apartment, and pronounced dead at the scene. “The universe lost a beautiful spirit with your passing. It was too soon. I will never forget the kindness you showed as one of the first people I met when I moved to MD in middle school,” wrote Heather Hahn. “As silly as it sounds, I never used a locker before and you took the time to show me how it worked. Police Charge Annapolis Man in Owings Mills Homicide

Jeffrey Michael Shiflett is charged in the death of Katie Hadel.

Baltimore County Police have charged an Annapolis man with murder in the death of Owings Mills resident Katie Hadel. Jeffrey Michael Shiflett, 33, of the 1700 block of Saint Margarets Road in Annapolis, is charged with one count of first-degree murder, according to a Baltimore County Police press release. He was arrested without incident Wednesday morning shortly after 11 a.m. when an officer spotted him walking on the street in the Reisterstown area, police said. He is currently being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center. Police found the body of Hadel, 33, in her apartment on the unit block of Wellhaven Circle Tuesday night while responding to a domestic disturbance report. Two Men Arrested in 2009 Randallstown Homicide

Baltimore County police arrested Eric Isaiah Johnson and Leonard Briscoe last week.

Baltimore County police arrested two men last week in the Sept. 30, 2009, stabbing death of Rodney Lewis in his Randallstown home. On Jan. 2, police arrested Eric Isaiah Johnson, according to a news release. Then, on Jan. 3, police arrested Leonard Briscoe. Both have been charged with first-degree murder. At about 4 p.m. Sept. 30, 2009, officers went to the Lewis' residence in the 9500 block of Liberty Road. During their investigation, police found out that Johnson was staying with Lewis and Lewis' wife. On that day someone had called and reported "finding the body of Rodney Lewis deceased on the kitchen floor," a county news release states. Lansdowne Man Gets 115 Years in Teen's Halloween Murder

Sterlin Matthews, 19, of Lansdowne, was sentenced Thursday to 115 years in prison for killing a 16-year-old boy on Halloween in Baltimore Highlands in 2010. According to a statement from the State's Attorney for Baltimore County, Matthews was convicted Oct. 25 in Baltimore County Circuit Court of second-degree murder, 11 counts of first-degree assault and three counts of Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Crime of Violence. The murder occurred Oct. 31, 2010, when Dequan Burks, 16, was with a group of teens for Halloween in Lansdowne. Gwynn Oak Man Gets Life for Woodlawn Murder

Antoine Reed was sentenced for a 2008 murder at Hunter's Crossing Apartments.

Antoine M. Reed Jr. was sentenced Tuesday in Baltimore County Circuit Court to life without parole in the 2008 shooting death of a Woodlawn apartment complex manager, according to a news release from the State's Attorney's office. Judge John J. Nagle III sentenced Reed, of Gwynn Oak, in the death of Milton Barnes, the manager of the Hunter's Crossing Apartments complex. Reed was convicted by a jury in August of first-degree murder and unlawful use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence . Barnes, "was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head on June 24, 2008," according to the news release. Barnes reportedly "had been having difficulties with an employee." Baltimore Man Convicted in 2010 Halloween Triple Shooting

Sterlin Matthews, 19, of the 1800 block of N. Bentalou St. is found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges in Oct. 31, 2010, shooting of Dequan Burks and two others near the footbridge over the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

A Baltimore County Circuit Court jury found Sterlin Matthews, 19, guilty of the murder of Dequan Burks, who was 16 when he and three others were shot on the night of Oct. 31, 2010, near the pedestrian footbridge over the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, according to a release issued by State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger. According to the release, Burks had been with a group of teenagers for Halloween in Lansdowne. The group crossed a footbridge into Baltimore Highlands when shots were fired by Matthews, the release said. Killer of Owings Mills Man Gets Life Without Parole

The man convicted of fatally shooting Owings Mills resident Scott Greenberg was sentenced Friday to life without parole.

The man convicted of murdering Owings Mills resident Scott Greenberg by shooting him six times in the back of the head was sentenced to life with parole plus forty years on Friday. Gerald Edward Sears, 33, was sentenced Friday by Judge Patrich Cavanaugh in the Baltimore County Circuit Court for the murder, which took place on Aug. 22, 2009, at Greenberg’s parents house on Velvet Valley Way in Owings Mills, according to a press release from the Baltimore County State’s Attorney's Office. Sears killed Greenberg, who was 50 at the time, over a money dispute, the release said. Milford Mill Man Shot, Killed in Randallstown

Willie Cedric Jackson, 19, died early Tuesday morning, March 29, of multiple gunshot wounds.

Willie Cedric Jackson, 19, of Milford Mill, died early Tuesday morning after suffering gunshot wounds at 4000 Winlee Road in Randallstown, Baltimore County police said. At 11:47 p.m. Monday, Woodlawn Police/Precinct 2, responded to a call of shots fired, said spokesman Lt. Robert McCullough. "When they got to the area of 4000 Winlee Road, they found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds," McCullough said. Jackson was taken to Northwest Hospital in Randallstown "where he was pronounced deceased at 12:35 a.m.," McCullough said. Jackson, who was born in June 1991, resided in the unit block of Heatherton Court in the Milford Mill area of Woodlawn, McCullough said. Read more on this shooting:
