"I'm not in this race as the next step in my political career," the front-running Republican candidate said at an Arbutus forum.
An over-capacity crowd of 600 or more jammed the Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109 in Arbutus to see GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney's only appearance in Maryland before the April 3 state primary. "I'm very excited he would come to this part of the county and state, since we're usually overlooked," said Charles Michael Johnson of nearby Baltimore Highlands. "This is very exciting for me," said Evan Richards of Lansdowne, a sophomore at Towson University who will be voting for the first time during the April 3 primary. "I've never been through a presidential campaign before." With the GOP race still open in a hard-fought political cycle, Maryland offers candidates the chance to win 37 delegates. "It's an honor" to have Mitt Romney in Arbutus, a resident says.
Updated at 5:45 p.m. to add quotes, description, background Mitt Romney made his sole visit to Maryland on Wednesday in advance of the state's April 3 GOP primary, telling a capacity crowd at a town hall meeting in Arbutus that President Obama is clueless about how to fix the economy. The leading Republican candidate, dressed in an open-collar shirt and jeans, greeted an overflow crowd of several hundred people who waited outside Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109, then spoke and answered questions from a friendly crowd inside. Obama's poll numbers are hurting because "Americans are hurting," Romney said, to cheers. "Let's make sure that come Election Day, he is out of a job." Inside the hall, Romney got more cheers from a capacity …
The southwestern Baltimore County suburb of Arbutus is ideal for Romney's only visit to the state before the April 3 primary, a political leader says.
Fresh from his March 20 victory in the Illinois primary, Republican front-runner Mitt Romney headed today to Arbutus for a town hall forum at the Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109. Romney is the first Republican presidential candidate in 2012 to visit the state in advance of the April 3 Maryland primary. His presence underscores the importance of the primary, which offers GOP candidates the chance to win 37 delegates in a political year when every state counts. A win in Maryland might avoid a brokered Republican national convention with former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-PA. Initial reports indicated that Romney would make three visits in Maryland, including a morning stop in Annapolis, the 3:30 p.m. town hall in Arbutus and an early evening…

The town hall at the American Legion post is the GOP hopeful's only appearance in the state before the April 3 primary.
The campaign staff of Republican presidential primary contender Mitt Romney has trimmed his appearances in Maryland in advance of the state's April 3 primary, canceling two previously scheduled events but keeping a town hall at Dewey Lowman American Legion Post 109 in Arbutus. On the day before the town hall, crews were busy at the American Legion setting up chairs and lights in anticipation of the crowd of hundreds that is expected. The town hall is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Romney campaign had announced appearances in Annapolis on Wednesday morning and another in Frederick, MD, in the evening. Both events were canceled without explanation, leaving the Arbutus town hall as Romney's only public presence in Maryland before the …
