Employees of the retail giant hope to take advantage of one of the year's busiest shopping days.
Employees of Walmart and Sam's Club locations across Maryland are joining a national strike effort this Black Friday to protest what they view as low wages, poor scheduling practices, and worker intimidation on the part of the retail giant. The campaign, organized by Making Change at Walmart and linked with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, is planning demonstrations outside dozens of stores nationwide on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. In Maryland, Nov. 23 protests are scheduled for Walmart and Sam's Club locations in Laurel, Hyattsville, Bowie, Gaithersburg, Woodlawn, Severn, Clinton, Abingdon, Alexandria, and Fairfax. With strong Black Friday sales nationwide, several Reisterstown merchants reaped the benefits.
Stephanie Torrible hasn't seen her Main Street consignment shop so crowded in the five years it's been open. But customers were packing Wear It’s At on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. “It was incredible,” she said. “We could not keep up. I had five people working and literally there was a line at the register the whole time and a line for the dressing rooms the whole time.” The store sold about $5,000 in merchandise during last year’s sale, but netted $20,000 this time around. In two days, the shop sold what it usually sells in two weeks. As the nation spent an estimated $52.4 billion on Black Friday, according to The Washington Post, Main Street merchants in Reisterstown had stores filled with people looking to spend. The trend …

Stores are competing for consumers looking for deals in a tough economy.
It appears holiday promotions will be more aggressive than ever this year. Walmart, Toys "R" Us and Gap are among the retailers who have said they’ll be open Thanksgiving Day. Target, Macy’s, Kohls and Best Buy will open at midnight for Black Friday deals, according to the Contra Costa Times, which said it was only a few years ago when Black Friday didn’t start until 5 a.m. And the promotions for Christmas shopping are already well underway. The week after Halloween, Arundel Mills had its Santa house up and running. Mr. Claus started making the rounds in the Mall at Columbia on Nov. 11.
