Bananitos: A Salvadoran Delight

While it's not the fanciest place, the food speaks for itself.

When trying an ethnic restaurant for the first time, I always take it as a good sign if people from that ethnic group are among the customers. On the Saturday afternoon I went to Bananitos Restaurant, the majority of diners were Latino. Bananitos is an exception among the chains along Reisterstown Road, just south of Franklin Boulevard, between Wendy's, Pizza Hut and Dunkin Donuts.  It's independent, owned by Rosa Carbajales, according to her son Javier, who doubled as busboy and cashier. The first things I noticed were the spaciousness, the reliance on natural light only, and the lack of printed menus. We love Bananitos and eat there often. It is very authentic - exactly as you might find in Salvador or Honduras. Try the tamales and the tacos and enjoy the hand made pupusas.   more ›
