I want to correct my previous comment. I have just read in the newspaper that O'Malley did not appear at the Preakness to present the trophy was because he, of course, wanted to attend his daughter's college graduation.   more ›

Powerball Jackpot Raised to Largest in Game's History

Winning numbers in Saturday's drawing could net a $600 million prize.

The jackpot in Saturday's Powerball drawing has been raised to a game-record $600 million, Maryland Lottery officials announced Friday. The increase, fueled by ticket sales, is the second in as many days. The cash option for the new prize is $376.9 million. The prize, if awarded Saturday, would be the second largest jackpot prize in history, behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot awarded last year. One of the winning tickets nationwide was sold at a 7-Eleven in Milford Mill. The drawing will be aired live locally on WBAL-TV at 11:22 p.m. Saturday. The jackpot has "rolled" (that is, no ticket has had the full winning numbers) 13 times since April, according to lottery officials. Powerball's previous record jackpot was $587 million, won…

Parade to Celebrate 100 Years of Reisterstown Volunteer Fire

Main Street will be closed from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company will celebrate its 100th Anniversary with a parade down Main Street Saturday morning. Main Street between Chartley Drive and the Reisterstown Village Shopping Center – where Food Lion is located – will be closed from about 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., said Calvin Reter, a member of the fire company. Although there was a possibility of cancelling the parade after the company lost firefighter Gene Kirchner earlier this month because of injuries sustained in a fire, the Kirchner family insisted the parade go on as planned, Reter said. Approximately 40 apparatuses will be joining the fire company during the celebration, according to the RVFC’s website.

Stop crime, I support the fire stations every time they request donations, so my complaint is with getting the news out there. You must live where there are multiple streets to get somewhere. Unfortunately I live on a street where the only way out is Main Street. And like I said, I very rarely drive up towards the fire house. And it's pretty sad I know of every yard sale in the area, but not when…   more ›

WTF: Marylanders Cuss How Much?

The Marchex Institute says Maryland may have raised cursing to an art form. What the #@%*?

What's so great about being nice?  Nice never got anybody anywhere, right? According to a finding from the Marchex Institute, those are some questions Marylanders might ask themselves considering the institute's recent findings: We curse and act impolitely on consumer telephone calls. Whether that says anything about Marylanders as a people is between you and your robocaller, but it's statistically true, according to the institute - only Ohio had more cursing measured on more than 600,000 phone calls from the past 12 months.  Virginia, our neighbor to the south, on the other hand, was fifth for most courteous. Marchex released the findings just in time for National Etiquette Week, monitoring calls placed by consumers to businesses across…

Baltimore County Council Gives Budget A Paper Cut

Council correction of a $100,000 math error represents the smallest budget reduction in the last three years.

The Baltimore County Council Thursday took a little off the top of County Executive Kevin Kamenetz's third budget. The council cut just $100,000 from Kamenetz's proposed $2.8 billion spending plan for the budget year that begins July 1. That plan includes nearly $1.7 billion in general fund spending paid for with county property and piggyback income taxes. "It's a fiscally prudent budget," Council Chairman Tom Quirk, a Catonsville Democrat, said, explaining that the small reduction taken by the council was a reflection of the weakened economy and sluggish property tax receipts. "There really wasn't a lot to trim," Quirk said. "It's all muscle and bone." The proposed budget contains no furloughs or layoffs and no property or income tax …

Tonino’s Closes Its Doors

Community wonders why longtime Main Street business closed its doors.

During lunchtime at Tonino’s on Thursday, there was no smell of freshly baked pizza or pasta, no chatter of locals on their lunch breaks. A sign taped inside the entrance in the back of the building simply read “Sorry Closed.” The longtime Main Street restaurant had quietly closed its doors. A block south on Main Street, two workers were fixing up Memphis on Main Street, which closed after a two-alarm fire on Sept. 16, 2011. They deferred comments to Jesse Issa, who owns Tonino’s and Memphis on Main Street, and was not available Thursday. Local residents reacted to the news with mixed reviews. Some said they blame the economy, others didn't like the food and some were truly upset. "This breaks my heart [because] in my opinion, there is …

Powerball Jackpot Upped to $550 Million

The prize is the third largest in American history, according to lottery officials.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday's drawing has been raised to become what would be the third-largest jackpot prize in American history. Due to strong sales, the jackpot for Saturday was raised from $475 million to $550 million, with a $350.1 million cash option. It is the second largest prize in Powerball's history. No ticket has had the winning numbers for the past 13 drawings—since early April, according to a Maryland Lottery press release. Maryland has had two winning Powerball tickets since the Maryland Lottery joined the game in 2010. One was a Pennsylvania couple who purchased a ticket in Elkton on Christmas Eve in 2011 that won them $128.8 million. That September, an Abingdon couple won $108.8 million, according to the release. …
