New Town Principal: 'Be Patient'

An ineligible player may cost New Town High School's football team a shot at the Class 1A North title.

's principal asked parents to "be patient" while the school investigates the football team's eligibility to play in the Class 1A North Region final Friday, an announcement on the school's website said.

The MPSSAA's website still shows New Town scheduled to play Overlea Friday night at CCBC Essex.

But Patch reported late Monday that the MPSSAA after the state's governing athletics body learned the team carried a player on its roster all season who was ineligible.

New Town Principal Sam Mustipher said on the school's website he would meet with parents at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school library.

"We are currently investigating our football team's eligibility for the 2011 high school football playoffs," the announcement on New Town's website said. "Please be patient as we conduct the investigation."

Regis Johnson, a New Town resident, said parents were planning a petition.
