State Death Count Rises to 6

The state’s death count has risen to six as more than 400,000 Marylanders are still without power.

Six Marylanders have died as a result of Friday night’s storm, Gov. Martin O’Malley said during a news conference Monday.

More than 400,000 Marylanders were still without power as of 3:30 p.m. Monday as the state approached approximately 60 percent restoration, O’Malley said.

Three of the six deaths from the storm were heat-related, and two of those three were senior citizens. Those deaths were in Baltimore City, Wicomico and Montgomery counties, according to Fran Phillips, deputy secretary of public health service for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

In the case of the other three deaths, an a Montgomery County resident died after a tree fell on their home and a missing boater’s body was found in the Chesapeake Bay by Maryland Natural Resources Police yesterday.

Pepco’s service area was at a rate of 51 percent restoration, and BGE’s service was at 66 percent restoration, according to O’Malley.

As of the press conference, all hospitals in the state were running, but 33 nursing homes and other health facilities were running on generators, with four of those working without air conditioning, Phillips said.

Approximately 800 more utilities crews are in Maryland tonight, which may bring Maryland to the level of staff it had immediately after Hurricane Irene, O’Malley said.

“None of us can be satisfied until every home is restored and so, no, I’m not satisfied,” he said about recovery efforts. “…But I am also mindful of the fact that we suffered a hurricane impact without the three to four days of hurricane warning.”

Why is there NEVER any mention of Delmarva? Seems like everyone thinks folks who have Delmarva aren't part of MD. Delmarva services parts of Harford Cty all of Cecil cty and parts of the Eastern shore. One thing I can say is that no matter how bad the storm we are hardly ever off the grid. This last storm we never lost power and family that did loose power were only off for about 2 hrs. Delmarva is AWESOME in getting power restored!!!!

Huh, I think Delmarva Power services Delaware. With no sales tax, lower crime and property taxes; that gives me another reason to consider moving to Delaware.

On the other hand, Delmarva is a corporate cousin of Pepco.

I have known Susan for many years. We were in Child Study together when my children were young.Read More She is a wonderful woman & I am proud to see her honored for her work with Linda. I also have gotten to know Linda from hanging at Mars & the Dollar Store. Linda & I have become friendly & I have had her over for dinner a few times and recently had a birthday party for her at my house. Linda is a wonderful woman and she is lucky to have Susan working with her. When I had Linda over for her birthday she talked about the award banquet, but she led us to believe the award was for Susan. When I took her home, I saw the award & realized it was for Linda. I'm excited for both women & proud to say that I know them both! Nancy Hoffman
