Six Marylanders have died as a result of Friday night’s storm, Gov. Martin O’Malley said during a news conference Monday.
More than 400,000 Marylanders were still without power as of 3:30 p.m. Monday as the state approached approximately 60 percent restoration, O’Malley said.
Three of the six deaths from the storm were heat-related, and two of those three were senior citizens. Those deaths were in Baltimore City, Wicomico and Montgomery counties, according to Fran Phillips, deputy secretary of public health service for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
In the case of the other three deaths, an a Montgomery County resident died after a tree fell on their home and a missing boater’s body was found in the Chesapeake Bay by Maryland Natural Resources Police yesterday.
Pepco’s service area was at a rate of 51 percent restoration, and BGE’s service was at 66 percent restoration, according to O’Malley.
As of the press conference, all hospitals in the state were running, but 33 nursing homes and other health facilities were running on generators, with four of those working without air conditioning, Phillips said.
Approximately 800 more utilities crews are in Maryland tonight, which may bring Maryland to the level of staff it had immediately after Hurricane Irene, O’Malley said.
“None of us can be satisfied until every home is restored and so, no, I’m not satisfied,” he said about recovery efforts. “…But I am also mindful of the fact that we suffered a hurricane impact without the three to four days of hurricane warning.”
