Roads are icy across the state, the Maryland State Highway Administration reported Friday morning.

“Crews are working on clearing primary and secondary roads, as well as fully clearing ramps,” State Highway Administrator Melinda B. Peters said.

"With air and pavement temperatures below freezing in many spots, you may encounter ice," Peters said.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Friday morning to alert drivers about the icy conditions, stating: "Roads that were wet or slushy have become icy" with several crashes reported. The statement applied to Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

In Anne Arundel County, Aviation Boulevard was closed at Terminal Road, reportedly due to a downed power line.

In Baltimore County, crews reported at 7:40 a.m. that drifting snow was causing problems.

In Prince George's County, MD 295 southbound was shut down completely past the capital beltway before 6 a.m. due to winter weather; US 301 north was also closed, between Rosaryville Road and Missouri Avenue, as a result of the weather.

On Interstate 70 and US 29, state highway crews treated roads with liquid magnesium, a chemical that will cause ice to break up when the sun rises, according to the agency's report Friday morning.

Highway crews employed the chemical because there was something called "hard pack" on the roads—which is caused by snow and rapidly falling pavement temperatures—the report stated.

If people are driving Friday morning, they are advised to remove snow and ice from their vehicles first; keep their speeds down; and leave extra room between vehicles. The National Weather Service reported that temperatures were expected to rise above freezing after 9 a.m.

What is the condition of the following roads in Baltimore County: Dover Road, Knox Avenue, Falls Road and Shawan Road? Thank you.

The Olympics should relocate to Columbia! Little Patuxent Parkway and Broken Land Parkway could be used for ice skating, speed skating and the luge. Our office opening was delayed to 10 am and I was shocked to see the condition of these streets as well as the long icy patches on Rts. 29 and 100.

There is a website that is constantly updated to reflect which roads have been plowed. Perhaps Patch could find it for us and post it often?

unless it's changed since I was doing it, generally the plow drivers concentrate on main roads first when the snow starts... 97, 50, 214, 2, riva road, etc... back community roads wont usually get done until a few days after the snow stops and not until the main roads are clear. how soon community roads get worked on depends on many factors. it's unrealistic to expect community roads to be done 1 day after the snow stops.

Thursday not even the main roads were plowed . Storm started at 8 on wed night went to work 10 hours later no plows out. Went up ritchie hwy across 100 to howard cnty and they were bad. However rd in my community was plowed. 10 hours later and not one plow on the major hwys in aa cnty is ridiculous. Howard cnty 100 was plowed down to pavement. No bang for the tax dollar anymore. Ps Rt 100 has1000 pot holes.
