UPDATE: Reisterstown Firefighter Gene Kirchner Dies in Hospital

The 25-year-old is the second fatality from a house fire April 24 at 19 Hanover Road in Reisterstown.

UPDATE (2:30 p.m.)--Volunteer Firefighter Gene Kirchner died Thursday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

The member of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire company was critically injured April 24 while doing a search during a house fire at 19 Hanover Rd in Reisterstown.

"It is with deep sorrow and regret that the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company announces the line of duty passing of Firefighter Gene Kirchner," according to a statement from the fire company. "Gene succumbed to his injures after an 8-day fight."

Gene was a 9-year member of the fire company, and was a junior firefighter for 2 years, it states. "A full fire department funeral will be scheduled."

A 58-year-old resident died inside the home during the fire, according to the county department.

That home is just a few blocks up the main street from the fire station.

The fire is under investigation.

Firefighter Gene Kirchner's funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills. Read about the funeral procession route.

Barnard and family This is a devistating loss to his family,his Reisterstown volunteer fire company family and to us in the close knit greater Reisterstown,Owings Mills, Glyndon area of such a great guy. Gene always had time to talk about the firehouse and the engines with my grandsons and I when we stopped by. He will be greatly missed. Our prayers to his family and Fire Fighter Family.

I remember Gene and his twin brother Will taking the fire truck to Jr. prom. That's how much he loved what he did. My thoughts and prayers are with his brother sister, family and friends.
