Police Warning: Car Left to Warm Up, Stolen

As wintry weather weather makes for cold mornings, police remind local residents to not leave their cars unattended with the heat on.

Police are reminding local residents to not leave their cars unattended to warm up, a situation which can lead to vehicle theft.

At 6:08 a.m. Tuesday morning, a car was stolen from the 900 block of Joshua Tree Court in Owings Mills. The car was recovered that afternoon.

“This happens every year as soon as the weather gets cold,” said Lt. Stephen Doarnberger, assistant commander of the Baltimore County Police’s Franklin Precinct. “She had gone out to warm up her car in front of her house and when she came back it was gone.”

So, what is Doarnberger’s advice? Brave the cold.

“They’re just gonna have to ride in the cold for a while,” he said. “It’s better than having your car stolen.”

Spend $100-$150 and have a remote start installed in your vehicle. By the time you're ready to go the car is nicely heated and it can't be stolen.

Can't put a remote start on a stick shift in MD because the car would have to be left parked out of gear. When the average small car is making heat in just about 5 minutes it is not going to kill someone to sit in a warming car that long. Heck, unless I have to get the defroster running I don't even turn the heat on in the morning as it is just starting to make heat by the time I get to work

Ah yes our quiet, quaint, lovely little town. So much the same as it was years ago. Or at least that's what everyone wants you to think. It's not full of trash and metro wannabe thugs or anything.

I used to leave mine in neutral year round with the ebrake up, no problem.

@ Jon Doe - yes a stick can be left in neutral but that is against state law because the engine and trans help hold the car in place over the ebrake. ebrakes do not provide a great deal of holding power by themselves, Forget to take the car out of gear at night and hit the remote in the morning and you have a car that can lurch forward/ backward into other cars or pedestrians and if the clutch is worn enough to allow the car to run without stalling you can have a vehicle that is now driving itself (and those are only legal in California as of this year!)
