Letter to the Editor: Thank You for Veterans Coverage

A Reisterstown Patch reader thanks Patch and offers information for veterans looking for jobs.

Dear Mr. Shapiro,

Please allow me to introduce myself. As Deputy Under Secretary for Economic Opportunity at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), I have responsibility for VA’s education (GI bill), vocational rehabilitation and employment and guaranteed home loan programs.

Additionally, my office assists in coordinating many veteran employment efforts and works collectively with the Department of Labor (DOL) and other federal agencies to promote and impact nationwide veteran employment.

I came across the Reisterstown Patch article entitled and I would like to personally thank you for the valuable service your newspaper is providing to this deserving group of individuals.

There is a new benefit called the Veterans Retraining and Assistance Program (VRAP) which is effective for training in a high demand career field beginning on July 1, 2012. This program was established in the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 as a measure to improve veterans employment.  Please visit  http://www.benefits.va.gov/vow/ for additional information. VRAP applications are now being accepted online.

i remember several presidents who threw out illegal alien workforces when the veterans returned from war to make sure all the vets could make an honest days pay, but it really seems no one is interested in honesty or actually going to work. Does any one remember president Eisenhower's operation wetback? When our government was actually interested in the welfare and health of our returning soldiers they at least went through the motions of showing support for the troops. go ahead research it see if you can figure out what other presidents did the same thing.

No, but I remember President Reagan's Amnesty program.

I have known Susan for many years. We were in Child Study together when my children were young.Read More She is a wonderful woman & I am proud to see her honored for her work with Linda. I also have gotten to know Linda from hanging at Mars & the Dollar Store. Linda & I have become friendly & I have had her over for dinner a few times and recently had a birthday party for her at my house. Linda is a wonderful woman and she is lucky to have Susan working with her. When I had Linda over for her birthday she talked about the award banquet, but she led us to believe the award was for Susan. When I took her home, I saw the award & realized it was for Linda. I'm excited for both women & proud to say that I know them both! Nancy Hoffman
