More than 80 family members and friends dropped by the on Monday, April 23, to help celebrate the 100th Birthday of Sarah Agnes Robinson. And what a celebration it was!
Reisterstown Senior Center Council President Calvin Reter started off the event by sharing a bit of Sarah's life story and having various members of the senior center read proclamations from all over the country and state. A letter from President and Mrs. Obama, a proclamation from Senator Ben Cardin, proclamations from the State of Maryland legislature were amongst those read. Miss Sarah also received a letter from Willard Scott from NBC's Today Show acknowledging her special birthday.
The center's Wii bowling lanes were re-named "Sarah Agnes Robinson Wii Bowling Lanes" in honor of her special occasion and because she enjoys the activity a great deal. She is also being recognized by the Baltimore County Executive Office and the County Council.
The day was filled with birthday cake and ice cream as any party should be. Sarah blew out all the candles, one for each decade - in one breath. It was a very festive day all around. But Sarah didn't just sit in her balloon-covered throne (courtesy of ), she was dancing up a storm, mingling with her party guests and having a great time.
When given the opportunity to speak, Sarah shared her appreciation for all her friends and family helping her to celebrate her special day at the senior center. She also shared just how much senior center was important to her. She asked to have her photo taken with Calvin Reter since she has known him since 1945.
Sarah is an active member of the senior center. She plays cards on a regular basis, is one of the record holders on Wii Bowling with nine consecutive strikes and regularly helps out with serving lunch at the center's Eating Together program.
"Sarah is an inspiration to us all at the center," said Mike Schneider, the center director. "Her smiling face and eagerness to participate really is a motivator for us all as well. And, she's just a fun and fascinating lady to be around."
Throughout the two hour party, members of the center and family members patiently awaited their time to dance and chat with Sarah, and the star of that special day accommodated each one of them.
"We all had a great time," said Bernadette Hill, vice president of the senior center council, "and I really think Sarah had a great celebration!"
