The Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) and Lewis Contractors brought construction to life for 175 blind or visually impaired students. Lewis and MSB, who are partnering on a multi-year campus improvement project, hosted a “show and tell” for the students at the construction site on the school’s 100 acre campus in northeast Baltimore.
Students and staff had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the construction equipment, tools, and materials that are being used to build the new state-of-the-art learning activity center and residential cottages on the campus. Presented by members of the Lewis construction crew, the interactive experience allowed each student to touch materials that are being used in the building process and ask questions of the project management staff.
The event was an exciting educational opportunity for the students, and provided a very unique tactile experience which is essential to students who are blind or visually impaired. Having heard and seen the demolition and construction on campus for the past year, students have now had the opportunity to connect with it first-hand.
As a statewide resource center, the School provides outreach, educational, and residential services to help students reach their fullest potential by preparing them to be as successful, independent, and well-rounded contributing members of their communities as possible. Annually, MSB serves 73 percent of the 1,800 students identified in Maryland who are blind or visually impaired from birth to age 21.
