Readers' Choice: Martha and Mary’s

The Reisterstown eatery garnered 38 percent of all votes to become Patch’s Best of Breakfast winner.

After five days of voting and over 500 votes for our inaugural Best of Patch contest, readers have decided who puts out the breakfast in Owings Mills and Reisterstown.

With 38 percent of the voting (199 votes) Martha and Mary’s is your Best of Breakfast winner.

A late push in votes helped Martha and Mary’s surge past second place finisher Bubb’s Deli and Bakery earlier this morning.

“That is a testament to social media, holy smokes,” Martha and Mary’s owner Annie Derzak said when told her restaurant won the award.

Derzak said that although she subscribes to the Patch newsletter, she didn’t learn of the contest until Thursday night at her kid’s soccer game. Then, Derzak started spreading the word to other parents at the game, as well as, Friday morning’s breakfast crowd.

“I had said to some folks, if you’ve ever enjoyed breakfast here, we’d appreciate a vote, if you haven’t had breakfast here, we’d appreciate you stopping in to see us,” Derzak said.

“I would much rather get something like this in Patch. We’ve been written up before in the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post and Baltimore Magazine, but Patch is local. That’s the people in our backyard, so that’s exciting.”

remember when polls weren't rigged and good breakfast places would actually win awards on the internet? i miss those days.

I wouldn't believe what the owner of Martha and Mary's says. I ate breakfast there earlier this week and it wasn't good at all. I was asked to do the poll then by either her or her waitress. They knew about the poll then. Why lie? I've never been to Bubbs but I will be going there now.

Something doesn't smell right, and I'm not talking about the eggs. My friend and I were asked to do the poll Wednesday. We did, but voted for Bubbs.

I didn't do the poll, but I would have voted for Gourmet Girls. My wife and I are big fans. How did they do? Martha and Marys sounds like they did something unfair.

Is social media only Facebook and Twitter? If so, I think Ms. Derzak has some explaining to do. After I saw this, I went to Facebook to like her page and saw she only has 7 people who like her and had only updated right before the poll closed. I think I found the tweeter and she hasn't put anything on it in over 700 days. Plus she only has about 30 people who like her there. I like her food most of the time but I agree with the others that something unfair has happened.

Does it really matter who wins this "contest" or how? It's not scientific, is not the final word always and forever, and it doesn't stop anyone from going to the place that's their favorite for breakfast. So Martha and Mary's might get a few more visits thanks to this victory, but if they don't deserve the title and don't meet the heightened standard that comes with a "best of" designation those new customers probably won't return and it'll wind up hurting the business in the end.

I've never eaten at any of these places for breakfast so I didn't vote and don't care who won, but nice job completely misinterpreting my comment, Marv.

To dddbs, "but if they don't deserve the title and don't meet the heightened standard that comes with a "best of" designation those new customers probably won't return and it'll wind up hurting the business in the end."........wanna tell me how that was "misinterpreting" your comment, duh?
