Solo Cup Opponents Won't Back Up Ethics Charge

Shirley Supik refuses to provide documentation backing up the claims of Say No To Solo.

Shirley Supik has a lot to say about Councilwoman Vicki Almond's relationship to the developer of the proposed Foundry Row project Owings Mills.

But when it comes to proof, the leader of Say No to Solo Coalition is silent.

"I'm not making any comments," said Supik during a brief phone interview Friday. "I'm sorry."

In an email Friday afternoon, Supik and her group accused Almond and her staff of an inappropriate relationship with developer Greenerg Gibbons.

"Councilwoman Almond and her staff attended the International Council of Shopping Centers Conference in Las Vegas as Greenberg Gibbons employees, in order to get a discounted membership," according to the email sent out by Say No to Solo. "This type of relationship with a developer—especially one with zoning approval pending—is unethical at best.

"But Vicki doesn’t agree. She called questions about her relationship with Greenberg Gibbons 'ridiculous' This begs the question: is it even appropriate for Almond to be making a vote on this zoning issue?"

Supik declined repeated requests for information backing up the claim.

"Well, I guess we have to wait and see how it pans out," said Supik, explaining that her group was waiting for Almond and the council to respond to a they filed earlier this week.

Supik later called back and claimed to have papers backing up her allegations but declined to share them.

"There is a paper trail," said Supik. "You'll just have to trust me."

She then referred follow up questions to Almond and Greenberg Gibbons.

The coalition is urging residents all over the county to call their respective councilmembers in an effort to pressure Almond into not changing the zoning that would allow construction of the 400,000 square-foot Foundry Row project.

Almond was not immediately available for comment. In an interview earlier this week, Almond said lawyers for the council were reviewing the group's request.

Brian Gibbons, chief executive officer of Greenberg Gibbons, did not return a call seeking comment.

The council has 30 days to respond to the request. The council is scheduled vote on the rezoning of the Solo Cup property on Tuesday.

Supik implied that the proof of her group's allegations would be in those emails, texts and other requested documents. She added that she was hesitant to interview on the subject because of recent stories questioning .

"To be honest with you, a lot of things that Patch has written has made it difficult for readers to take the coalition seriously," said Supik.

If Almond has an inappropriate relationship with Greenberg Gibbons then I'm sure Ken Oliver has an inappropriate relationship with Brown. I'm not sure why Supik doesn't have a problem with that, especially considering he's her County Councilman and Almond is not.
"To be honest with you, a lot of things that Patch has written has made it difficult for readers to take the coalition seriously." This is rich. Patch is the villain for reporting on the issue. Love it.

SO no credibility, no accountability, and no response to the same type of questions/accusations she's making towards Vicki Almond?
Yea, sure. Get your 15 minutes and your name in the papers. In the end, your corporately backed "coalition" is going to lose anyway. Owings Mills needs fresh life breathed into it, and leaving prime real estate undeveloped and stagnant is not the way to do it.

Of course she did. Her handlers weren't happy with the result of the interview and told her to call back. Her 15 minutes are up on Tuesday. Expect them to throw more of this unsubstantiated stuff at the wall until then.

If they filed a PIA that should answer some questions. Then it will be either put up or shut up depending on the response.
It's obvious that bones rattle in many of these closets but paper trails don't lie as long as you can produce them providing the county complies with the PIA.

If Senate leader Harry Reid can make serious accusations ON THE SENATE FLOOR during a session with no proof then anyone can do the same. Especially since so many effectively supported such vile baseless accusation.

Joe that is why I always say there is a paper trail in many of these types of situations. It appears that the situation here is a wait and see hinging on the documents received in the PIA request.
Either they will shed light on this or they won't. If they don't, end of story. It may not effect the vote on the zoning issue, however it could (deepening on the (documents) impact other issues regarding the relationship between developers and the council.

So if the "group" is doing everything they can to try to stop the rezoning, why wouldn't they show the public any evidence they have? Oh right, because there is none.

I have known Susan for many years. We were in Child Study together when my children were young.Read More She is a wonderful woman & I am proud to see her honored for her work with Linda. I also have gotten to know Linda from hanging at Mars & the Dollar Store. Linda & I have become friendly & I have had her over for dinner a few times and recently had a birthday party for her at my house. Linda is a wonderful woman and she is lucky to have Susan working with her. When I had Linda over for her birthday she talked about the award banquet, but she led us to believe the award was for Susan. When I took her home, I saw the award & realized it was for Linda. I'm excited for both women & proud to say that I know them both! Nancy Hoffman
