DogFest Big Success for Humane Society

The 5th annual event, held at the Baltimore Humane Society in Reisterstown on Saturday, was attended by thousands.

Thousands of pet owners came out to Reisterstown with their furry friends on Saturday for the 5th Annual DogFest at the Baltimore Humane Society.

“The event went off without a hitch,” said Wendy Goldband, spokeswoman for the Baltimore Humane Society. “It was flawless.”

The day featured games, contests, demonstrations and kid activities. The most popular events were dog swimming, the agility course, and contests like best costume, best kisser and best owner/pet lookalike, Goldband said.

Games included 20-yard dash, bowling, hide and seek and much more. “Basically things kids do, but we had them for dogs,” Goldband said.

For the kids, there was a moon bounce, arts and crafts, face painting and a Shakespeare factory where they got to act out scenes with animals.

Celebrity guests included Stan "The Fan" Charles, Maria Dennis from MIX106.5, Little Black from 92Q, Lolo from Magic 95.9, Sheilah Kast from WYPR, Jennifer Franciotti from WBAL-TV News, Laurie DeYoung from WPOC and Dels. Jon Cardin, Dan Morhaim and Michael Smigiel.

Although last year, the event was effected by a traffic backup, that issue was dealt with this year and there was no backup.

The event serves as the no-kill shelter’s main fundraiser of the year. The organization is not connected to the Humane Society of the United States or Baltimore County Animal Control, so they do not get federal or county funding.

“We really rely on the money we make from this in order to operate and stay open,” Goldband said.

The Baltimore Humane Society is always accepting monetary and material donations from the community. The shelter, which is at capacity, goes through materials like dishwashing soap, laundry detergent, paper towels and non-clumping kitty litter regularly and could always use more, Goldband said.

“Everything is a major need,” Goldband said. “Just the daily operation of keeping the shelter running keeping the animals fed, taking care of them and giving them proper training so they can be adopted.”
