Stevenson Welcomes Award-Winning Graphic Designer Gail Anderson
as its Spring 2013 Artist-in-Residence; Reception and Talk Feb. 19
Stevenson, MD ¾ Stevenson University’s School of Design and Department of Visual Communication Design will host a talk and presentation by award-winning graphic designer Gail Anderson, the University’s Spring 2013 Artist-in-Residence, on Tuesday, February 19 at 6 p.m. in the University’s Inscape Theatre on the Greenspring campus. A free public reception will be held at 5 p.m. in the lobby of the Inscape Theatre. All are invited.
Stevenson’s Greenspring campus is located at 1525 Greenspring Valley Road, Stevenson, MD 21153.
A designer, writer, and educator, Anderson served as creative director of design at SpotCo, an advertising agency specializing in artwork for Broadway and institutional theater. Her work resides in the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the Library of Congress, and the Milton Glaser Design Archives at the School of Visual Arts. She has also had the opportunity to lecture on design—and on her famous bottle cap collection—across the globe. Formerly senior art director at Rolling Stone magazine and designer at The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine and Vintage Books (Random House), Anderson received a Lifetime Achievement Medal from AIGA in 2008 in recognition of her “eloquent, editorial, and entertainment design using bold innovative typography, illustration, and photography to engage audiences with a new standard of emotional and visual connection.”
“Some might call Gail’s method retro,” wrote Steven Heller, “but her work defies stylistic pigeonholes. She is neither modernist, nor postmodernist, but rather fusionist. She embraces the vernacular, but respects the classics. She extols the old and makes it new. And don’t be deceived. She’s one hell of a dragon lady when it comes to kerning and letter spacing.”
