Inspiring Others Through Wrestling and Children's Books

Owings Mills High School graduate Richie Frieman's career path may not be very conventional, but that's just the way he likes it.

The “Thrill from Israel,” Buster Maccabi, and Terple the Turtle: one, a confident, energetic professional wrestling persona. The other, a lovable, inspirational children’s book character. (You can guess who’s who). Both are products of the creativity, innovation and versatility emitted from Richie Frieman on a daily basis. Born in Richmond, VA, Frieman grew up in Owings Mills, and has used both characters, almost alter egos, not only to quench his career callings, but to send a message that fulfilling one's dreams is never out of reach. The premise of never backing down from your goals may sound a bit corny or cliched, but Frieman has truly lived it. Facing doubt and ridicule for entering the professional wrestling circuit at 5'5'' and 165…

'Disappear Fear' Draws on Jewish Roots in Sunday Night Concert

Disappear Fear, which traces its roots back to Baltimore, plays at Adat Chaim Sunday. It will be the last show for Cindy Frank, the younger sister of band leader Sonia Rutstein.

Performing in a Baltimore-area synagogue couldn’t be a more appropriate gig for Disappear Fear front-woman Sonia Rutstein. Having been raised in Pikesville and getting her Bat Mitzvah at Beth El Congregation of Baltimore, Judaism and Sephardic melodies had a huge influence on Rutstein’s music. She’s even based a few songs around Jewish prayers. “My Judaic roots are definitely a big part of my music, the philosophic part,” she said. “I’ve played in lots and lots of Unitarian Churches, so it’s sweet to be able to play in synagogues.” Disappear Fear performs Sunday at Adat Chaim as part of the Uptown Concerts series. It will be the last Disappear Fear show for Rutstein’s younger sister, Cindy Frank, an original member of the band. For the …

Summer Movie Season Starts Next Week

Hollywood rolls out its list of blockbusters with The Avengers.

A few sequels, one or two reboots, and Johnny Depp in weird costumes. The summer movie season is about to start. MTV is calling 2012 a nerdy movie summer, and also one of the biggest. Says MTV: It's a crowded landscape to be sure; you'll want to spend your hard-earned theatergoing cash wisely if you want to weed out the fantastic, can't-miss movies from the [ugly], must-miss ones.  Here's a few of the movies planned for the summer. Which ones excite you the most? Did we miss any? Tell us in the comments.

Next TV 'Bachelor' Could Be From Baltimore Area

If you don't have a criminal record or a wife, you might have a shot.

ABC TV is looking for a location in Baltimore in which to have an open casting call for the reality show, "The Bachelor," according to news reports. Both women and men can apply. Applicants "must not currently be involved in a committed intimate relationship, which includes: any marital relationship (whether or not the parties are separated or currently in the process of divorcing or annulling such marriage); any co-habitation relationship involving physical intimacy; or a monogamous dating relationship more than two months in duration," according to ABC's website. Applicants also must never have been convicted of a felony, or be a candidate for political office. Surely, area Baltimoreans have something to say about that. Comments?
