Visions for Vacancies: Valley Center Movie Theater

What would you like to see occupy this vacant theater?

Located in Valley Center off of Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills, the space that used to be home to AMC Loews Valley Center 9 has been vacant for quite a while now.

The lights inside still go on at night, but it's hard to tell what's still inside since the doors are sealed up.

The theater has a bit of an unfortunate history. Paul Schrum, a 62-year-old Pikesville resident, was randomly shot dead about 20 minutes into a showing of "X-Men: The Last Stand" in 2006. The theater remained open for a number of years after the shooting.

What sort of business do you think would you like to see in this space? Tell us in the comments.

Is there a commercial vacancy you'd like to discuss? If so be sure to email editor Marc Shapiro (marc.shapiro@patch.com) and maybe it will be featured in the next Visions for Vacancies.

That building is in a weird place that seems like it's convenient but is really hidden from everything, hard to find, and kind of strange to get to. I can't imagine any business going in there and standing a fighting chance. Business people apparently agree since it's been vacant for so long. I think it should just be demolished and nature should be allowed to retake the space.

I think it should be a family entertainment center or a roller skating rink.

I'd love to see a Costco come to the area. Sam's Club is dirty and often has moldy veggies and fruit....B.J.'s is terrible....We need a decent warehouse to open in the Owings Mills area.

A Cheap Movie Theater!!! Show old movies, or one's that have already left the box office. Remember The Village (Riesterstown) and the one on Liberty Rd. I know movies come out on DVD so quickly now, but I am sure their would still be movies better to watch on the BIG Screen. Show Independent, foreign, black and white etc. at an affordable cost. Bring back when the whole family could go to the movies and buy popcorn.

Since the space has very low visibility, the best use for the space is probably something that people will seek out or intentionally look for. A park or rec space might survive... Maybe an office building? I wonder why anything was built there in the first place. It is in such a weird location that almost anything commercial seems destined to fail.

Oh, yeah - good idea Carrie. A moderate quality cheap movie theater would definitely drive people. I know people who live in Catonsville who drive all the way around the beltway to Beltway 6. If a family has more than one or two kids, the current movie prices make going to the movies prohibitive.

Tear it down....space is too big and location stinks.
Look at the old FRANKS lot on Reisterstown RD.
Has been sitting there for 8 plus years now...
Or the Shoppers building going on 2 years now..
These buildings will continue deteriorate and no one will purchase them (its the truth). Economy stinks and there is no green side in the near future.

The best use for this space is as a second run movie theatre. It is a;ready set up this way, which means a new owner has minimal investment in renovations. And there is plenty of demand for lower priced entertainment these days.

You are not right...
This theatre needs a lot of renovations, not minimal as you say..
The parking lot is tore up completely. The inside is disgusting, it never stayed up to par with other movie theatres. Everything inside, including the carpet and screens were torn in some places...The technology also needs to be revamped and upgraded..You dont understand what is involved to get up and running (a movie theatre specifically) until you start going through the process.

A shooting range would be great at this location, right now have to drive to Hunt Valley.

Level the joint and build a Drive-in Theater. Would make two in the county, and Bengies is still going strong. (shades of my youth.lol)

It has to become something special and unique to bring people back there. I like the idea of a drive-in. But, I also like the idea of a FUNLAND type of building with a Larry Sheets type of venue like Westminster has... glo-golf, laser tag, video games, bumper cars, etc. It could be a place where families could host a birthday party, etc.

I would personally love to bring foreign films to that location. At affordable rates. Host movie premieres as I do at other theaters with the actors in attendance. I am soooo interested in managing this building and revamping it for my own business. Unfortunately, the building has been sold per the realtor Jack Devillier.
Do you all know who purchased it? Perhaps I can show them my proposal for business.

If anyone needs to I can be reached via text on 240-232-6461.

Thanks

Barbsie
