Speak Out: Has Memorial Day Become National Barbeque Day?
Have cookouts and pool days eclipsed the true meaning of the holiday?
The question spilled out over Facebook, Patch and other sites over the Memorial Day weekend.
Has Memorial Day lost its meaning?
The question has taken a few manifestations.
A picture of a woman lying at the foot of a gravestone has been circulating the web with the caption “Memorial Day. In case you thought it was National Barbeque Day.”
And commenters under a Patch story about barbeque recipes underscored the message as well.
“Memorial Day is a day to reflect and remember those who sacrificed life, limb and mind to ensure the freedom we have today,” wrote Lorraine Kelly. “It is not about sales, trips to the beach and barbeques. It is fine to enjoy the above as long as you acknowledge those who sacrificed so that you can.”
Weigh in on our poll or in comments below: Did you recognize the true meaning of Memorial Day over the weekend?

It's definetly lost meaning. Even Ken Ulman tweeted: "thank you to the men & women who are serving or have served this great country. This #memorialday is for you."
When a politican doesn't know the difference between Veterans' Day and Memorial Day, both holidays have lost meaning.

I looked everywhere I could think of (including Patch) and could not find a Memorial Day ceremony in Howard County. If anyone knows of something local, please post it here, and perhaps it can be something folks can consider for next year.
If there are indeed no local events then it seems sad that an area as large as HoCo does not honor, in a significant way, those who have fought and died for us .

Hi Mike - I asked the public information officers at Howard County Government, and they said they weren't aware of any Memorial Day ceremonies that were held in Howard County over the weekend.

Nothing in the Reisterstown area. I would have participated.

When Five Guys puts "Happy National Hamburger Day!" on Facebook rather than "Happy Memorial Day," we know it's lost all meaning.

I don't go every year but this year was the 2nd time I attended the ceremony held at Dulaney Memorial Gardens in Cockeysville. It was a ceremony about 2 hours long mixed with a band playing patriotic songs, the Maryland Sings choir performing a couple of songs, plaques given to family members and/or representatives of the families of 7 Marylanders who lost their life in battle in the past year, laying of wreaths, taps and a 21 gun salute as well as a few speeches about our valiant service men and women. A very patriotic event held each year. A good way to start the day before heading off to a picnic :)
