Police: Suit and Tie-Clad Man Robbed Zales

A man stole about $116,000 from the Zales at the Owings Mills Mall, police said.

Baltimore County police said Monday they are investigating an incident in which a man wearing a suit and tie robbed Zales in the Owings Mills mall at gunpoint earlier this month.

In the incident, police said the man stole approximately 50 rings valued at $116,000 after holding up the store on Monday, May 7, at 7:20 p.m.

“He had asked to see a ring, and when [the employee] unlocked the case, that’s when he threw the bag on the counter and pulled the gun and told them to fill the bag up,” said Lt. Stephen Doarnberger, assistant commander of the Baltimore County Police's Franklin Precinct.

The suspect, dressed in business attire, lured the two female employees into a back room after collecting the rings and then fled the scene, police said.

The mall has a vacancy rate of more than 50 percent, and Doarnberger said that means fewer witnesses are around for a robbery of this type.

This is not the first robbery of its type at a jeweler in the area.

In January, three men were charged in an armed robbery at Antony Jewelers in Owings Mills in which the men smashed jewelry cases and stole custom jewelry, rings and watches, valued over $100,000, police said.

Also, armed robberies at jewelers in malls have happened elsewhere in the region.

Last April, three men were charged in an armed robbery at a jewelry store in the Mall in Columbia, where they got away with about $300,000 in "high-end watches," Howard County Police said.

This mall is a lawless dump now. BCPD needs to setup a command post there, or the county needs to condemn this thing. It's getting out of hand.

As the officer said, vacancy means less witnesses. If/when redevelopment happens, the place will (hopefully) be so full of people with a very visible security presence that it will be hard to pull this type of thing off. My brother worked at the Hunt Valley mall (the old mall that was demolished) at Sam Goody, and there were several robberies when he was there, and one in which his boss' arm was broken. I don't see these things happening in Hunt Valley anymore.

Adam, I guess you didn't read about the other robberies in Owings Mills and Columbia. Should we close Antony's and the Columbia Mall too? This is a key reason why the mall needs development. A mall at less than 50% capacity is just wrong...

Who in their right minds would even WANT to set up shop in Owings Mills Mall or anywhere in OM for that matter? This area is going downhill faster and faster everyday. Maybe if they got rid of all the Section 8 housing in the area things would improve.

And where will this section 8 housing go? It can't just disappear. I unfortunately don't have statistics off hand, but I live and often hang out in places very close to low income and government housing in Reisterstown. I have never felt unsafe walking around anymore than I would anywhere else.

I think we need to give it another name...section 8 has an odd stigma attached to it because of the class silliness...
