Owings Mills Man Gets 15 Years for Sexually Exploiting a Minor
Joseph Anthony Kallash had sex with a 15-year-old and was caught with child pornography.
A 31-year-old Owings Mills man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for luring a teen girl he met on Facebook to skip school and come to his home for sex and then exploiting her for child pornography.
Joseph Anthony Kallash was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years followed by supervised release for life. He must also register as a sex offender where he lives, works and studies upon his release.
He had faced a maximum of 30 years in prison followed by up to a lifetime of supervised release for sexually exploiting a minor to produce child pornography. He had pleaded guilty to the charges.
"Child molesters no longer need to hang out at playgrounds and shopping malls, because they have 24/7 access to children in their bedrooms,” said U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein in a press release. “If you let your child use a computer, smartphone, iPod or any type of internet-connected device without adult supervision, your child is in danger.”
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
According to his plea agreement, Kallash met the 15-year-old on Facebook in November 2010 by posing as a teenager. The victim was introduced to Kallash by a 15-year-old friend, who said she and Kallash had sex at his home that August, according to justice officials.
In November, Kallash picked up the victim and two of her friends who were skipping school and took them to his home where they drank alcohol, smoked marijuana and watched a movie. Kallash had sex with the victim in his bedroom, the release said.
On June 21, 2011, after the victim told Kallash she wouldn’t have sex with him anymore, he asked if he could have sex with her younger sister, at which point the victim called Baltimore County Police, officials said.
Kallash was arrested and admitted having sex with the victim, according to the press release. Police said they searched his home and seized two laptops, an external hard drive, iPod and camera cell phone, which contained sexually explicit pictures of minors.
