O'Malley Calls Special Session To Deal with Budget, Taxes

Work will focus on balancing budget and eliminating $500 million in "doomsday" cuts.

Gov. Martin O'Malley Friday announced he will call state legislators back into session May 14 to deal with lingering state budget issues.

“There is too much at stake not to move forward,” O’Malley said in a statement Friday afternoon. “I’m confident that we can come together with the Senate President and House Speaker to complete this most important work for the people of our State.”

The session will focus on balancing the state budget and eliminating more than $500 million in cuts that were part of a so-called "doomsday budget" what passed at the end of this year's 90-day legislative session.

As part of that session, some legislators expect the General Assembly will be asked to approve an income tax increase for some Maryland residents. Shifting of teacher pensions from the state to the local jurisdictions may also be on the table.

O'Malley promised details on the session in a joint news conference with House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller. The news conference is expected to take place some time next week.

Of Course they will - why - becuase they love them taxes MD does !!!!!!

OWEmalley is such an idiot - he was going to make sure we pay out more because he does not have to worry about re-election and he has no idea how additional taxes affect the average family. He has made the comment that "a one cent tax wont bankrupt anyone"....yeah but if you factor in all the other gazillion taxes already imposed - the gas tax on the table - the other fees in this State - you know what it does add up. Vic Carter interviewed the Gov one time and asked him basic questions about how much a gallon of milk cost, a loaf of bread, and a gallon of gas and he was off on all of them.

If he runs for President I am absolutely forming a Marylanders against OWEmalley group.

Tax this!

Maryland government in the Annapolis State House, Senate & House chambers are failed business models but they always seem to find ways to make $$$$. FREEZE the budget 1 or 2 years, as my pay has been. Also, deduct for each day of any Special Session" from each representatives pay (Dem & Rep to be fair) 1/90th of what they get paid for their regular session pay to go toward the cost of the special session(s). Just my 1 cent, can't afford 2.

Hang onto your wallet and pocketbook since O'Malley and the den of thieves are going to "work" once again to find more of our money to waste. They have pushed the budget up by almost 2 billion dollars from 34 billion last year to 36 billion this year. And then they can't find 500 million in cuts from this bloated monster of waste?

Sure hope the Annapolis crowd of dunderheads don't use this same type of lack of control on their household budgets.

Why should we pay for a special session. What was accomplished in the 90 day session. What was in the hundreds of bills the gov signed the other day?
Not only should there be no special session but what can we do to push for a session once every 2 years.

Maryland established the Spending Affordability Committee in 1982 to limit the rate of growth of State spending to a level that does not exceed the rate of growth of the State's economy. Annapolis has failed to follow its own Committee every year since. The incompetence in Annapolis has reached an all time high and they justify it by stealing more from hard working taxpayers.

Maryland will never, ever get rid of the liberal clowns. Fortunately Harford county has enough local votes to counteract many of the liberal commenters on the Patch pages. There's a long line of women and "men" on the HdeG patch that would do for Owe'Malley what Monica did for Clinton.

This is always the ridiculous argument statists spew forth when someone questions government spending. No one, except hardcore libertarians of where there are very, very few, expects to pay no taxes for necessary services. Heck, I'm even perfectly fine with my taxes going to build and maintain something like Reisterstown Regional Park, which is a terrific use of public funds. But there's no way you can tell me that $500 million can't be cut from a $36 billion budget without sacrificing necessary and/or acceptable uses of public funds. We're talking about reducing spending by a lousy 1.4% and that's called "DOOMSDAY." Please.

Two of the highest paid state employees earn in excess of 2 million dollars - the University of MD women's basketball coach and the men's football coach. Why? Neither is a necessity for academic excellence. Both are a waste of tax payer money and a burden to students who take out college loans to finance their education. It's time we start getting real with the tax dollars we spend. Cut the waste.

The UM's women's basketball coach Frese makes $1 million dollars! Women's sports DO NOT make money. This is just some kind of pay parity scheme to make everybody feel good. Maryland basketball probably pays for almost all of the rest of the sports combined in addition to their good fortune to have Kevin Plank in their corner. I'd be in favor of getting rid of all sports that can't pay for themselves by sponsorships or private contributions. Do you know UM wants to tack on special fees/taxes on the student body as a whole to fund the teams that nobody watches especially the women's sports.

Hear is an example of how STUPID those who support O'Malley and this special session are .Call ten people out of the local durectory ,try varios ones ,ask them if they think we NEED this special session. The Patch can do this because people wouldn't believe the results I got .I called until I got ten Responses did't count no answers or I don't believe in polls or who the heck are you and then hung up.The Patch has papers throughout Maryland have everyone get ten responses .Same question "Do we need this special session" Yes or No .Forget all the extra answer (believe me you'll get plenty ). Fact is I di three of the small whitepagebooks balto city county and anne arundel .NEVER GOT A YES answer .
DO you hear Annapolis ? There is NO support from the people but the Stalinistic O'Malley (Must build more expensive road projest keep my donors happy and the rich able to get From Rockville,Montgomery from waiting on traffic lanes open) is going to make his puupets dance .Maybe if the Patch did it across Md. maybe local delagates and senators MIGHT get a clue what is going to happen in 2014.

What is it that Republicans/Conservatives/Tea Party types don't understand about people who vote Democratic?

Most people who vote Democratic are not single issue voters. They don't like taxes anymore than anyone else. If the only thing Republicans brought with them to the table were lower taxes, they would run this State. But across the entire country, look at what Republicans do when the get control of their state legislatures. Planned Parenthood, abortion, union rights, lower taxes for wealthy, etc. Fix it and the Republicans will take over, but they won't.

Those will be the same citizens who will pay the per diem for the lawmakers who failed to do their constitutional duty and pass a balanced budget. That duty being the ONLY duty they are required to perform. Or will it be special interest groups and unions? That seems more like who will benefit And remember this, there will be no public testimony needed during the session, seems politicians like it this way. How's that for transparency in government.

Actually, according to the Tax Foundation, Maryland's tax burden is only 36 out of 50, which puts us in the lowest 3rd. (The Worst at No 1 is Tennessee--who would have thought?) But taxes don't tell the entire story--Hawaii at 45 has one of the lowest tax rates, but it has a broad sales tax and is ridiculously expensive to live there. And Florida's ranking is 29th, which makes it a higher tax burden for working people, but since they don't tax investment income (I think) or estates , it is a better place to retire. I guess the point is, if all you care about is the tax rate, you can move to Montana or Maine (two of the least tax rates) but I find plenty to love about Maryland that makes it worth paying the taxes. (Although I would love it more if I paid less!)
