Har Sinai Cantor Signs Contract Extension
Cantor Robert Gerber has signed a three-year contract with Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills.
Cantor Robert Gerber, who has more than 25 years of cantorial experience, most recently with Har Sinai Congregation, has signed a new three-year contract with Har Sinai Congregation to begin July 1.
“Cantor Gerber, who came to Har Sinai Congregation last year, balances incredible talent and international performing experience with a personal touch and love for this congregation,” said Stewart D. Sachs, president of Har Sinai Congregation. “He makes a difference at Har Sinai Congregation, and we’re happy he signed a long-term contract with us.”
Since his graduation from the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC–JIR) School of Sacred Music in 1983, Gerber served as cantor at Congregation Beth Israel in Houston, Texas, where he was the congregation’s first full-time cantor. In addition to singing for services and officiating at life cycle events at Beth Israel, Gerber trained and directed the Beth Israel B’nai Mitzvah program, taught in its Religious School and directed the junior choir. Over the past year, Gerber has now taken over many of the same roles with Har Sinai Congregation.
Gerber has performed with opera companies in Israel and Germany and has been a soloist with musical ensembles in the United States and abroad, including the Houston Oratorio Society and Houston Symphony. He has been a board member and officer of the American Conference of Cantors, served on various URJ committees, and his community involvement has included the United Way “Campaign for the Homeless” and the Braes Interfaith Ministries Choir.
In 2009, Gerber received his Doctor of Sacred Music from the HUC–JIR School of Sacred Music. Prior to attending HUC-JIR, Gerber graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Michigan School of Music.
“Cantor Gerber has been a blessing the congregation and I have him to be an invaluable partner in prayer. He adds so much to the the clergy team at Har Sinai Congregation, and I personally look forward to continuing to work with him for many years to come,” said Rabbi Benjamin Sharff of Har Sinai Congregation.
