Steve, It appears as if the officer was "ambushed" by the suspect just walking up to his car. I'm sure if the officer had the opportunity he would have used his service weapon or personal weapon (if in fact he was carrying one at the time). Unlike Baltimore City Police officers the officers employed by the Baltimore County Police Department are not required to carry a weapon at all times. Of course now you're going to say something like "he will from now on" and it doesn't surprise me that you didn't even suggest the officer recovers quickly or something like that.

I live not even a minute from there I live a street over from there. I will not be living there for long. I have 3 young children and I will not expose them to this. I see it coming into the county almost every day. I just moved here almost 2 yrs ago, but I had lived in the same area about 5 yrs ago and I have seen a major difference since then for the worst. I have seen this type of groups forming on community streets all over the county, I would appreciate guidance from the police, or others on how am I as a lone driver supposed to react when the road is blocked by youths. Should I stop and wait for them to decide to move? Should i honk my horn and aggravte them further? Should I speed up and scatter bodies along the roadside? Should I call 911 and report armed gangs blocking the street and hope that the swat team can arrive in 1-2 minutes. Should I jjust stay home and turn the strrts over to the youths?

My most unpopular suggestion - and I know firsthand HOW UNPOPULAR THIS SUGGESTION IS - get rid of the Video games. Six years ago I made the decision to purchase an XBox 360 because I did not have enough money for gas, motel room for 2 nights and ramen noodles - our annual mini-summer-vacation to OC. After one year of watching my Kid and his friends go from pick-up basketball games, soccer games, football games, skateboarding and BMX bikes to Zombies in front of the TV with the Games. I resorted to hiding the XBox - it rarely saw an appearance unless it was a weekend and believe me, I never heard so much carrying on. It was an addiction. On another note, rarely out in the country do you see an XBox game. Rarely do you hear of a shooting. I think the kids should also take a REAL gun class. The country kids are used to guns, and what a gun can do because most of them hunt. They KNOW first hand how a rifle works and the damage it can do. There is NO curiosity. The person who did the shooting obviously is immature and un-educated in owning a handgun - otherwise, what was the point in the shooting to begin with.

I agree with jackblasio. Since there's a dearth of information in every article I've read about this crime, (i.e., The questions not answered: How large was the crowd? Was it teenagers or adults? Men or women or both? Do they live in the area? If not, where are they from? Was this a gang initiation? Was the gunman and his accomplices in this crime arrested? Was the firearm registered? etc.), one can only assume that, at 3:00 in the morning, a "large crowd" is blocking the road, and what? Looking to give people directions? I don't think so. I contend that they were LOOKING for someone to shoot, and that officer was just their "lucky" target.
