Developers Release Site Plans for Wegmans, Rest of Solo Cup Land

The site plan for Foundry Row at Owings Mills shows precisely what community officials indicated it would last week -- a "small-scall Hunt Valley" retail center.
Greenberg Gibbons and Vanguard Equities described their proposal as "an upscale retail destination and community gathering place."
In addition to Wegmans, the development plan includes 275,000-square feet of upscale retail space in an open-air center with shops, restaurants and outdoor gathering spaces for concerts and community events, a joint statement said.
The development will incorporate industrial-style architecture using glass and metal, reflecting the site’s manufacturing history, the statement continued.
The vacant, 52-acre Solo Cup property still must undergo rezoning before plans are finalized, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said.

I hope this will not be the typical Owings Mills shopping consisting of nail salons, cleaners, fabric stores and liquor stores, etc. I would love to see a community of more upscale retailers and less "service" kind of retail. But I am sure such businesses as nail parlors and cleaners will make up a majority of the retailers at this proposed center - they always seem to do so...sigh. Nonetheless, a very interesting site plan - one that appears to make the best use the land.

O.M. Mall started off with nothing but "upscale retail space" too, and we all know how that turned out. Owings Mills is not Hunt Valley, and I don't think this retail center will make it such. Not for very long at least.

Wow, ddbs, you sound very optimistic there! NOT! Listen, no one can know, for sure, if any retail development will produce upscale/high quality tenants. One can only hope so, givin the variables and research done. I just want to see an unique retail enterprise; one that is conducive to high quality and that's not primarily tailored towards services.

I just bought a house in Owings Mills this July - first time for us. Excited about all the upcoming development at the mall and with the old SOLO factory. I love Wegmans and almost never go b/c of the hike to Hunt Valley (really, I just hate I-83. let's be real, Hunt Valley isn't that far way). On top of bringing new entertainment and jobs, maybe it can even give us homeowners a little more equity. My hope is that it makes Owings Mills and the surrounding area a more desirable place to live, especially for families. Hubby & I are from Annapolis but after 4 yrs in the area, O.M. really feels like home.

Sarah, it's good to hear. I am glad you like Owings Mills. I like the area too, Unfortunately, not everyone shares that same sentiment as you and I do. With change comes challenges and, sadly, not everyone in this area embraces change.
