Police Raid 10 Internet Gambling Parlors Across Baltimore County
Warrants have been executed against Internet cafes in Baltimore County.
UPDATE (1 p.m.)—Baltimore County police raided ten Internet cafes on Wednesday where they believe illegal gambling took place, police announced in a release.
According to the release, detectives conducted a year-long investigation and found that the businesses were illegally using electronic gaming devices. Equipment was seized during the raid, starting at around 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The 10 locations, by police precinct, include:
Precinct 2/Woodlawn
- Spin and Win, 8500 block of Liberty Road, 21133, Randallstown
- Click N Spin Computer Club, 1800 block of Woodlawn Drive, 21207, Gwynn Oak
- Wireless Cafe II, 5200 block of Baltimore National Pike, 21229, Edmondson
Precinct 6/Towson
- Hot Spot Sweepstakes, 1300 block of Goucher Boulevard, 21286, Towson
Precinct 9/White Marsh
- Fun Spot Cafe, 4100 block of East Joppa Road, 21236, Perry Hall
- Hidden Treasures, 9500 block of Philadelphia Road, 21237, Rosedale
- Big Dawgs Calling Cards, 6200 block of Kenwood Avenue, 21237, Rosedale
Precinct 11/Essex
- Wheel of Fortune Phone Card Center, 100 block of Carroll Island Road, 21220, Middle River
- 88 Sweepstakes, 100 block of Beacon Road, 21220, Middle River
Precinct 12/North Point
- North Point Internet Café, 2700 block of North Point Road, 21224, North Point
"At the direction of Police Chief James Johnson, detectives conducted a year-long investigation of these internet cafes. They established that the businesses were using electronic gaming devices in an illegal manner. Detectives were able to use computer terminals to play electronic games and receive a monetary payout for points accumulated during the games," the release showed.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with the investigation, police stated.
The sweepstakes parlors, or Internet cafes, typically sell computer time and a chance to win a sweepstakes drawing, and also provide access to video poker, slots and other forms of online gambling.
John Cox, deputy director of the Baltimore County State's Attorney's office, first confirmed that search warrants had been issued.

This type gambling is illegal and should be prosecuted. There are venues where gamblers can go to do their thing. If allowed to continue our communities will soon look like third world slums. It's a slippery slope. Gambling should only be done in a responsible fashion by those who can afford to lose the money being used. (and that's not many of us). I applaud the raids.

AND WHAT ABOUT BINGO???? you get paid to play, they are in most communities, they are opened late hours with ore without security. At least at the Cafe's you meet really nice people, who are out for enjoyment, there is no alcohol served but they feed you good food on the weekends, you listen to great old school music, and it's relaxing, I guess you prefer going to the Bar getting drunk and going home and harassing and abusing their families or risk getting a D.U.I or worse kill someone. The Cafe's deserve a little more respect, those that live in glass houses should not throw stones. Those that spend their money on the lottery may have invested for years with little to show for it, (sometimes nothing) at least when you go to the cafe's you also have a chance to win prizes just like BINGO and for the same reason people play BINGO is the reason amusement is found right in their own neighborhoods where they pay their Taxes. To Baltimore County, you did your job, but the people that are most affected are our Seniors. I have not heard any reports of any killing, stabbing or robbery at any of these cafe's...so what prompt you to do this? WHAT

Yes lets blame the police for enforcing the laws. How about they dont enforce any laws you dont like, or the next guy, or I dont like. Thats right cuz then laws enforcement would not take place. How about if you dont like a law get it changed and if you cant get it changed because the majority of people disagree with you ( move, accept it, or start a violent revolt and become a dictator). Vice crime itself are usually victim less but the community has spoken and has said not here.

Silly talk, it is being enforced because the government feels it is losing revenue. Just like cigarettes, liquor, etc. If the government is losing tax revenue, they are on it.

Oh please, I don't want to see people speeding and getting into accidents, but really? Spending hours standing on a major highway to ticket as many people as possible? I didn't get a ticket because I don't speed and never have had a ticket, but they had like 4 cars pulled over, people slamming on their brakes, causing a hazardous situation. I made sure to flash with my lights to as many cars as possible and please don't try to tell me it's illegal to do that because it isn't. I checked years ago and nothing has changed. I will always do that every time I see radar being taken, especially at the bottom of hills if people don't brake continuously. There are a lot of crimes going on in Perry Hall, that should be a priority.

Evets, the law may have changed since then, but, some years ago, I was driving up Padonia Rd. and someone was nice enough to flash their lights warning me of an impending speed revenue trap. Soon after, I saw a trap on the other side of the road and flashed my lights to warn those drivers. When I reached the trap on my side, one of Balto. Co's. Finest pulled me over and read me the riot act, telling me that flashing my lights was illegal and that if he caught me again he would throw the book at me. I called the Cockeysville Precinct and asked if the purpose of their speed traps was to slow people down and save lives or collect a quota of tickets. Of course, they gave me the expected answer. I then called the State Police and they said the right thing, which is, they don't care if people slow down from being warned by flashing lights or by getting tickets. I called Roger Simon of the Sun and he wrote a column about it, which put me in fear of retribution by the County police for a while thereafter.

You are so right and they are much friendlier. They are in communities for a reason and plenty of people go there as their evening escape from worries and job stress. You get a chance to talk with senior citizens, win door prizes and meet pinochle card players. Personally I have met more people and laughed, celebrated birth days, listened to oldie for goodies and enjoyed myself without having to lose a mint like I would at a casino. If Maryland Live was getting the revenue they predicted and O'Mally and Rawlings were not pushing the gambling for these new casinos these little places would be left alone.

Remember where the illegal funds go....
It's just like other silly crimes- counterfeit clothes, marijuana, etc etc a quick glance with no education will show "no real harm" people say victimless a lot....
Start tracing where the money goes with these "victimless" crimes and you will have a new perspective!
Everything from the mob, to Terrorists, to european and asian sex trade....
We are just too stupid to look past the first stages of what things look like and that's why I love reading the comments...

Let's look at where the "legal" funds from our "legal" casinos go. Some to "schools" to pay the bloated salaries of the way overblown "administration" who provide no real value to education. Some to social welfare programs for some people who have been living off the system for generations, etc.
While a certain portion of "legal" casino taxes goes to good causes, a lot goes to causes no more worthwhile than those you have listed.

Yes, I noticed it when they first put all those god awful stickers on the front of the building and than it sat for a while. Next thing I knew it was open and packed! What type other place other than a shady place need a security guard at 4pm in the afternoon on a Tuesday? I wanted to go in an check it out but I know for a fact I would have stuck out like a sore thumb, so I just became a gawker as I drove by.
Places like this do nothing for our neighborhood but call in the dirtbags and trash that are associated with these places. I can't wait to welcome in the redevelopment of the GSA buildings into what is shaping up to be a fantastic mixed-use area. Well see though, being right on the bus line only spells trouble for most places. If it goes through you can bet your last dollar I will be selling my house within the first six months of it being open.

When you send postcards out to every home in the area proclaiming "Win" "Fun Times" "Lucky You" and try to cover it over as a legit Internet Cafe (when Internet access is free everywhere you look) then the stupid businesses shouldn't expect not to get busted. My guess is that they are doing it expecting to get caught to build a virtual clientele that will visit their online sites later. So they lose $15-$20k in computers? You could spend $4-5k on one slot machine and the licensing to go with it.
And most people don't realize that then you pay the Comptroller another 10% of your gross sales on that "amusement" device. So the State and County will look the other way while they sell you an overpriced amusement license for each machine (I think it's like $1500 or $2000 each in the city) but then bust the mom and pop shop running the machine - did they really think people would dump hundreds of dollars a week into a video game if it didn't pay off..... Give me a break. Either outlaw it or make it legal, but don't take the guy's money then bust him in a sting when you know what he's doing.

If the State/City/Counties can't link it to drugs, sex or alcohol they can't understand why folks want to go there and are having fun so they close them until they can figure out how to tax them to death. Watch, these places will come back on they have figured out how to make them undesirable by taxing and individuals are miserable again.

Why did they even bother with this? It's just past time to make gambling legal period and move on. No 'special places for casinos' or anything else.
Just make it legal and move on.
If you are worried about people not paying taxes on winnings, then you should also worry about people working 'under the table'. It's just as impossible to regulate and stop.

Pay close attention to the timing of events--two weeks before the election and the vote for question 7. It is almost as if they were holding these places hostage if people didn't vote for question 7. Also you have to consider that politicians are angry that people are enjoying these spots more than Maryland Live which takes and takes and keeps on taking. Also remember that these places were granted ligitimate licenses and you do have the option on doing internet searches if that is what you choose to do. As with anything until the City/State can figure out how they are going to get their cut enjoyment stops for everyone else. I say if you haven't been to one don't disrupt it for everyone else. There have probably been more people visiting the block than these little spots. During the football/baseball games it was really nice to play a game, laugh and cheer for your team, eat, listen and sing, etc. It's all gone for no reason. Everyone does not like sitting in bars!!!

It's a bunch if B.S. The only reason these places were closed down us because the State if Maryland couldn't keep all the profits like the MD Lottery. All you people who agree with this are either wealthy. Work for the government, both or just ignorant.
Why aren't you complaining about the businesses selling 200 scratch-offs. They'not shut down because the govt runs them. They don't mind that 90% if people playing nd lottery are people making less than 15,000 s year. It would be ok if they would really stand to win. But only 5% of the scratch-offs win, and 4% if those is for the amount it cost to buy the ticket. Only 1% wins the player a profit. Millions and millions of people. So desperate to have money just to get by that they spend their hard earned money with false hopes if winning.
These parlors at least provided a social place for a lot if elderly people who can't afford other amusement . I did my share if investigating. The average person that patronized these places were 60snd older. The average bet was 32 cents or lower. The average playtime with a $20 was 3 hours.
You think the state cares about crime in your neighborhood. NO. They closed these places ONLY BECAUSE they were mad that people were nit spending their money ONLY ON THE LOTTERY - Their money - Their livelihood.
