Big Lots Coming to Reisterstown Shopping Center, ROG Takes Redistricting Position
The Reisterstown-Owings Mills-Glyndon Coordinating Council addressed shopping center, Rule 1300 and redistricting at its meeting Monday night.
The space that formerly housed Ames in the Reisterstown Shopping Center will be home to a Big Lots, a shopping center operator said.
The remainder of the north strip at the Reisterstown Shopping Center will be demolished this summer, with the exception of a 50,000 square-foot space, said Bob Pollokoff, president of shopping center operator Fedder Management Corp.
Approximately two-thirds of the remaining building will be occupied by Big Lots, he told the Reisterstown-Owings Mills-Glyndon Coordinating Council at its meeting Monday night.
“Clearing out this entire north end is [to] attract a number of different retailers the community might like, but we might not have been able to otherwise accommodate,” Pollokoff said.
His company is still working to relocate remaining tenants in the strip, he said. His company and the owners are also in the process of searching for new tenants, and are in early talks with a sit-down restaurant, he said.
“What we’ve done here is harmonious with what we think the community wants the shopping center to become,” Pollokoff said.
Pollokoff said retailers are hesitant to open new stores, and many are waiting to see what happens at the Owings Mills Solo Cup plant, which will close by mid-2012, reports say.
In addition to movement at the shopping center, the dreaded Rule 1300 came up at Monday's meeting. ROG President Mary Molinaro wrote a letter on behalf of the group to national, state and local officials about the school board policy, which community groups said makes it nearly impossible to hold events on school grounds.
Molinaro got the same answer from several officials.
“Basically, all of them said the board of education is an autonomous group and they can do whatever they please,” she said.
Continuing to voice its collective opinion on local issues, the group voted to endorse redrawing Baltimore County Council lines, and putting as much of Reisterstown as possible into one council district. It is currently divided among districts 2, 3 and 4.

What a shame this area couldn't attract something a little nicer. We already have a successful Dollar Tree there. Big Lots already failed in this area once. How much more do we need? Chipotle Anyone??

Seriously... the best we could do is [once again try for success with] Big Lots? I mean let's be realistic here - that center (save a few stores) is laughable. Not much there, poor maintenance, poor safety... So in an attempt to "revitalize" the Reisterstown are, we bring in a "B class" store - that failed 2 years ago 1.8 miles down the road. And I ask... why did I move to Reisterstown??
Thanks developers - for nothing!

There is so many negative comments on here and I can see why Reisterstown does not have success. It is very sad to see this type of attitude. I believe people should find out facts first, just because a store closes down does not always mean that the store was unsuccessful. It is and can be many reasons. I do wish Big Lots and other future merchants success.

I always thought the Big Lots had done well and was sorry to see it go before so am glad to see it return. I wish them success, and I hope they come up with some interesting solutions for the rest of the center. There are lots of good things happening in Reistertown. Have you noticed the stores on Main Street? What about a Kohls (or similar level store) for the former Shoppers Food location--give Target competition. There needs to be places for people to find part-time and full-time jobs in these centers, where they can walk to work or bike. Security is an issue and I hope it is beefed up with the addition of more shops. I'd also like to see some sort of Art Center/Theatre/Gallery much like the Carroll Arts Center, and some more public parking and safer crossing areas from Franklin Blvd ALL the way up 140 to Toninos!!!!

I for one am happy to see Big Lots coming as long as it is well maintained. I agree that there may be other reasons surrouding their other store closing such as lease issues or others things. As a lifetime resident of the Reisterstown/Owings Mills area it will be nice to have an affordable store there. Afterall what did the Mall bring with its high end stores? Just my thoughts.

A 'crappy' store to go along with your 'crappy' attitude. Who Are you to judge big lots & there decisions. They have no say over the condition of their stores, thats the LANDLORD'S responsibility. Considering they are hanging right in there with Walmart & Target right now, they can't be too bad.

Big Lots was very successful when it was over in the other shopping center. However they only had a short term lease and that is why they left. They did NOT leave because they did poorly.

I was also excited to read elsewhere is Patch that a Planet Fitness will go in next to Big Lots. As nice as the Brick Bodies is, that gym is out the the price range for lots of people. So I think the lower cost option of a Planet Fitness is a good choice. Another thing I noticed is the renovation of the liquor store in Reisterstown Shopping Center. Have you been in there? It's very nice, open, with a HUGE wine selection up front. I've noticed the owner is hosting wine tastings and similar events also. It no longer looks like a "beer store for old men" and I enjoy stopping in. I am disappointed in some of the negative comments here and I encourage anyone who is dissatisfied with Reisterstown to please take their lousy attitudes and move elsewhere. I have lived here 8 years and have watched some ebb and flow in that short time but overall Reisterstown has much to offer, much more than some similarly sized towns in Baltimore county. Think: library, Main Street antique row, two annual festivals, good schools, diverse population, ALDI (love it!), Big Lots, skate park, dog park, ice rink, mini golf, ball fields, Icedgems, TWO book stores, a very cool coffee shop (Java Mammas); a band shell in the park!, some of the best restaurants around (Sonny Lees and Harryman House!!!) ;art studios and galleries, and tons more. If you don't like all these amenities, please leave. I see an upward trajectory!
