27 Fish Worth $5K Stolen From Backyard Pond

There were at least seven different types of fish in the pond in Owings Mills.

An Owings Mills resident fell victim to a fish-napper last week when an assortment of gilled pets worth thousands were taken.

The thief stole $5,000 worth in fish from a backyard pond in Owings Mills, police said.

A total of 27 fish of various types were taken from the pond, located in the backyard of a home on the 3300 block of Carroll Avenue in Owings Mills, between 12 p.m. Jan. 14 and 2 p.m. Jan. 20, according to a Baltimore County Police report.

The fish types included koi, butterfly koi, channel catfish, albino koi, shubunkin and others, according to Lt. Stephen Doarnberger, assistant commander of the Baltimore County Police’s Franklin Precinct.

I had the same thing happen last winter BUT don't believe a person did it. More likely a heron or pack of coyotes. I live in the same general area as well!

I have seen Great Blue Herons fly around storm water management ponds looking for food. Maybe they were victims of a fly by instead of a fish fry.

Definitely a heron or coon. We had our entire pond decimated by both. Gotta hand it to the heron, eating a $5000 fish dinner is epically decadent!

Just like the deer that eat our shrubs, heron have to eat in the Winter also. How about a wire net over the pond? Does insurance cover such a loss?

There are mink in this area that have been seen taking large koi from ponds. They will dive down as deep as fifteen feet to catch fish. They will also stash the fish in a burrow to eat later. They are mostly nocturnal and for this reason are not usually seen.
